Entry

This role is the easiest to describe, and the hardest to properly do. Your job is to enter the site according to your strategy, gain information on enemy placement, kill or heavily damage the defenders to make sure your team has an easier run to get in to the site. You do not need to always try and take the kill though, map and site control are key. If you can force a player to fall back and watch from a different angle you may be able to take that round by simple strength of position.

To play this role you need to have great game sense, timing, and a deadly shot.

Support

You are there to pick up kills, follow in the entry and trade kills if necessary. If the entry killer gets tagged up before entering or while clearing the site, you may need to step through and take over that job in the middle of your execution. Pronax is one of the best in the world currently playing this position.


AWP

Not all teams have a designated AWPer, mostly because there are only so many people that are as gifted with an AWP as KennyS, Guardian and JW. The role of the AWPer has traditionally been to hold the hard angle, something to give them an advantage over a rifling player. The current meta is one that has been favorable to aggressive snipers. Using odd angles or pushing to uncommon spots to catch players off guard to get picks have been commonplace until the recent changes to the AWP. Though it still happens, it is less frequent.

The Lurker

Lurkers, or as some people call it “Back Stab”, are players designated for a few tasks. Obtaining map knowledge of the other side of the map, checking for flanks and pushers, and in some cases making noise as a diversionary tactic or trying to pick off individual players. They also have the responsibility of being one to take out rotating CTs, often shooting them from behind as they push toward sites (hence the back stab).

The Rifler

The AK-47 and two M4 rifles are arguably the core of the whole game and they play a part of every single match. A rifler is therefore more of a general term for anybody who is confident in their ability to pick up one of these automatic rifles (M4, AK-47, FAMAS, Galil AR) and comfortably get kills with it. There are however notable professional players who have become notorious for the control they have with either specific rifles or all of them. They are the frag machines, able to win duels, spray across maps, get single taps one after another and generally dominate the gun play in a game.

Because the two primary automatic rifles are the most popular weapons in the game it is generally a good idea to get as confident using them as possible. Being a solid rifler is never a bad thing, nobody on your team is going to moan at you for only using a rifle every round as they might if you only used an AWP for example. There are multiple ways to train with rifles and plenty of guides to help you do so effectively. If your team has somebody who is obviously skilled with the primary weapons it can be a good idea to try and let them trade out kills for you rather than the other way round. Admitting that a player is better than you and keeping them alive is worth the dent in pride if it means it helps you to secure victory. Likewise you may notice that the other team has somebody whose raw aim and skill with a rifle is causing your own team problems, keep a note of the positions they hold and avoid if possible, or direct your best player to these locations.
