FFV - Sprites!
Hello new friends! So I just discovered this awesome group. :) I love modding, so it's perfect!

Anyway, I'm curious about the progress, if anyone is working on it, for the FFV character sprites. I would love to help out! (anyone? :p) This is my favorite FF game, and the new sprites make me feel.... not excited.

I saw Krisan Thyme's awesome sprite tool. I've already took it for a spin. Love it!

Sorry to say there hasn't been much talk recently in the group. I'd guess it's due to Krisan working so hard on a number of mod projects. Some of the mods that have come out have been massive(Like the restored content mod and monster mod in the FF 13-2 thread) and they're doing it all without official tools too so it's taking a long time but I am sure they would appreciate the help(I don't speak for them tho lol I just keep a closer eye on the boards then most ppl)
Oh by the way I am pretty sure the new sprites are ported from the mobile version of the game, thats why they don't look real great. I haven't got the game yet so I don't know for sure but that's what I hear. Anyway have fun and good luck :steamhappy:

Ah, I see.

Well I've started redrawing sprites, anyway. I just finished Bartz's base Freelancer sprites.

Edit: I'll post some screenshots soon, to get some feedback from those who see 'em. :P

I've wanted to work on completely redoing Faris' sprites, but the lack of artistic ability and image editing software has prevented me from getting started.

Not to mention, I was holding off to see if someone was going to restore the original sprites first, read an article about how to do simple upscaling that you then tweak via an artist to make much cleaner sprites that don't defy the original intention.

You should give it a shot. :) There is a paintNET software you can download for free. It's similar to photoshop. Like with all software, you'll need to learn the buttons, but it's very easy.

Link: PaintNET[www.getpaint.net]

I've already tested out scaling the SNES sprites, but it's actually quite.... bad. I've opted to redrawing them all using the iOS sprites as a base. I hope people like the new look..... :S

This article went over some great details on how to upscale original sprites and then detail them out.

I'll try out PaintNET, I guess. I just worry about the undertaking I have planned.

Thanks for the link! That was a great article!

If you have a lot planned, just take your time. I can always help you out, as well, if you want. I'm doing a lot of different sprite tests, to find a good style for the main party.

What did you have in mind for Faris?

I'm wanting to completely redo pretty much all of her sprites to fit her more masculine demeanor. It felt weird to me that they had this plot for her that she's basically meant to be disguised as a man, and even feels uncomfortable when forced into a dress and such. Then you go and play with her in battle and costumes such as Mystic Knight have her in a bikini.

First, I'm gonna attempt to at least get the default sprite to more closely match the Amano concept art, though.

Edit: http://i.imgur.com/1CucyUr.png Slight in progress rework of her base sprite. Not sure I like the gold on the boots, but I was trying to keep as much spirit of the concept art.

That's a great idea! I've always thought the same thing. Some of her outfits just don't make any sense for her character. I honestly like what you've done so far. The ponytail looks great!

The boots could use some work. The gold is a nice touch, and it really does make me think of the Amano art. Her hair on the back sprite doesn't seem like it matches what you've done with the front. (seems like a different hair style from the back)

Other than that, keep it up! I will post some of my stuff later this week. I am just super busy with school at the moment.

Here is a new look for Bartz. For anyone that sees, let me know what you think! I could use some good feedback. For easy comparison I'll show the before and after.

Oh, very nice! That helps blend the character into the environment much more and he doesn't look like he's jutting out his chest anymore. I don't really see anything in the way of things to fix, personally.

I haven't made much in the way of progress with Faris at the moment, but I'll try and see if I can't incorporate some similar changes.

I really like the look of those new Bartz sprites. I cant belIeve you're doing this and you did the FF3 menu mod. Good work. Id really like to get into modding because i want to fix the FF4 menus!

Wow, it will take quite some work thanks for the effort.

I attempted to start preemptively converting the FFVI sprites (based off of the data from the Android version) and quickly found out 1:1 scaling from the old sprites mangles the sprites (because they do not scale 1:1 to the new size) and that it was out of my league. I'd imagine the same applies to FFV too. It made me appreciate the new sprites more honestly seeing the old ones close up right next to the new ones. There is a ton more detail to consider with even less than double the height.

That's not to say I don't appreciate mod work like this though, of course.
