Caesar 3 + Julius Open-Source Re-implementation
Caesar 3 on GOG: https://www.gog.com/game/caesar_3

Quick blurb from the Julius Mod github page:

Julius is an open source re-implementation of Caesar III.

The aim of this project is to create an open-source version of Caesar 3, with the same logic as the original, but with some UI enhancements, that is able to be played on multiple platforms. The same logic means that the saved games are 100% compatible, and any gameplay bugs present in the original Caesar 3 game will also be present in Julius. It is meant as a drop-in replacement for Caesar 3, with the same look and feel, so there will be no major UI changes.

UI enhancements include:

- Support for widescreen resolutions
- Windowed mode support for 32-bit desktops
- Several small in-game quality of life improvements
- Julius requires the original assets (graphics, sounds, etc) from Caesar 3 to run. It optionally supports the high-quality MP3 files once provided on the Sierra website.

I played A LOT of Caesar 3 back in the day and really enjoyed my time with it, brings back a lot of memories building my perfect Roman empire. I've been debating for quite some time whether or not I wanted to pick it up and see how it ran on Win 10 or Manjaro Linux.

I'm not sure how I'd missed this thing, called Julius, an open-source re-implementation of the game to bring it up to snuff for modern OSes, widescreen, etc. How awesome! Can't wait to try it out, for now its in my queue until I finish what I'm playing now.

But figured I'd share this with you guys and ask, who's played this?

I've not played this build.. but Caesar 3 is a stand out game. I actually havn't played it in a long time, maybe 8 years or so. Still I went through a spat around then and played Caesar 3, Zeus + Poseidon and Pharaoh... they were all awesome, even so long after release.

I'm pretty interested to see what the new generation of city builders will bring. I think there is 2 egypt ones and a rome one incoming along with a heap of village and colony ones.

I have played Caesar 3 and Pharaoh at release but never played Zeus. Is Zeus the better one of the three mentioned? How do you guys rate them?

I never played much if Pharoah or Zeus. Caesar 3 was my go to back then. Shortly before I had some changes that limited my video game time for a few years.

Gotta say I'm impressed with this mod/rework for Caesar 3. Works perfect on all my Win 10 systems so far. Super lightweight of course.

Cant wait to play more.

Picked up Zeus + Poseidon and going through the tutorials right now.

I'm using a widescreen mod. Select 1024x768 under display ingame to activate the mod:

There seems to be a fourth game only available at GOG:

What do you think so far? Worth $10?

6 hours in and still in the tutorial. Haven't played a game outside the tutorial yet. It's $5 at the moment on steam.

18 hours in and can't continue my campaign because heroes refuse to attack the objective. It is bug ridden.

I have tried the Augustus mod for Caesar 3 which is much better than Julius IMHO. It adds gameplay features from the later games.

Thank you! I just watched part of a recent video on the Augustus mod for Caesar 3, and it seems like it takes things to the next level beyond Julius.

I didn't have time this weekend to post about it, so thank you for doing so today! Now I need to make time to check this out. :)
