Your favorite soundtrack in a game/4x game?
There are few titles that carry the combination of a great game and a superb soundtrack, others just an ok game and a superb soundtrack. Regardless, the music always invites me back to that game, creating nostolgic feels for the future.

MOO2 is an oldy but I still love hearing that soundtrack

Endless Space as well as FTL are one of the bests I've ever heard though. I suggest checking those out if you havent already.

Also have to give it up to the Endless Legend and Dungeon of the Endless. The composser for the Endless games is great.

I'm curious to know how important music is to you in a game, 4x or not. If so what is your favorite ones?

There is a indie project remake of SC2 i have not played it much. tried to get my daughter to play it but she wasnt into it... I dunno. I mean i was glued to the orignnal game.

Its strange but SC2 sound is one of the only game music scores i have really cared about. Its all very strongly themed.

Send more sound tracks.

I guess SC2 is not quite a 4x... RPG with the 4x elements.

But... I mean i spent hours and hour working with the GUS to get the best music out of these games. Although admittedly trying to make computer stuff do stuff is more enjoyable to me generally than the thing its supposed to be doing.

Nice. I haven't played as many games as some in these forums and hadn't heard many of those tunes. Anyway, an old favourite of mine that's stuck with me over the years...

listening to the previews.. A strong StarTrek TMP feel to it. Fitting. I like the intro to the intro.

You must not have played Civ4? The "Baba Yetu" song - the main menu song for the vanilla version of the game is very ... uplifting! (Religious songs tend to be?) And I think that they synchronized the most impactful sequence with the sunrise over Earth for maximum effect. Really, I don't think any game menu ever had such an impact!

Obligatory parody :

Also, I'm pretty sure that either the Rise of Mankind : A New Dawn or Caveman 2 Cosmos mod has/had this "most Civ-like non-game music ever" for the main menu :

Endless Space is the best Imo. Not a 4x but FTL is also one of my favorite soundtracks out there.
Crunchy Apr 20, 2016 @ 4:54pm
@blue honestly I don't remember it.
The song is vaguely familiar.
I played a lot of civ 4. It's the reason I blind bought civ5 which I ended up not liking.
I did not find them remarkably different and civ 4 is filled with content plus Nimoy.

I once read (No citation) that the point of videogame music was to encourage the gamer to progress without providing a distraction.

I still believe that Megaman 2's sound track captured that perfectly. Almost 25 years after the first time I played that game, i can hum all the major boss stages from memory but i never felt it detracted from my concentration.

Speaking directly on 4x games, two game comes to mind when capturing that virture.
Endless Space.
Civilization5.

Both have excellent tracks that I can recall even to this day but never remember it being a distraction from the actual gameplay.

That seems like a simple task but the line between distraction and immersion in a video game is so fine that only a few musicians/developers have captured it.

I've been listening to the music of Stellaris (I got the soundtrack as part of my purchase) and I am really enjoying it.

One of the best musical scores in a 4x space game.

Everytime i hear this song while playing it reminds me we live in a golden age of musical scores in videogames.

Totally agreed. I wasn't sure how Andreas Waldetoft's style would mesh with a future SF setting, but turns out he really outdid himself with this one!
