My personal top ten decided in a combination of memorable gameplay and amount of time I ended up spending with the game. Fight me.

Ok, I'll try to be "honest" and go strictly by number of hours played on Steam (4X games only). Although that does necessarily exclude any games I played pre-2005. So, here goes...

1. Stellaris

6. Space Tyrant (anyone remember that one? :-)

10. AoW3 & NuMOO (almost a tie)

My top three straight 4X games, in terms of the impact they had on me at the time Ii got them, are without question:

1. Distant Worlds
2. GC2
3. Endless legend/Fallen Enchantress

Between those three and all other 4X's stand HoI3 and EU4 for me, except Civ.

Civ is a problem for me on a top 10 list 'cos although I played Civ 1 a bit way back I've mainly played 4, 5 and 6 and frankly there are things a really like and things I really don't like about all three of them. I can't really say I like one better than the other, I can't put them in any order.

I do make special mention of Fallen Enchantress though. I've played a couple of games of that recently and IMHO it stands out as lot better than I had remembered. In fact I'm going to edit it in equal third with EL I think. FE benefits from clear multiple victory paths that enable you to bring your game to a swift conclusion more or less when you feel like it assuming you have had a good game and got yourself into a good position (which a lot of 4X games don't). As per Rob's comments in the video it also benefits enormously from the PvE situation plus the engaging combat system to complement that which again is somewhat unique.

In short I think putting FE on the top 10 list is by no means unreasonable IMHO.

Hmm good lists here.. I think some of my choices won’t surprise some:

1. Shadow Empire

6. Age of Wonders (3 and PF, or series as a whole besides shadow magic)
7. Civ 5 or Civ 3
8. DWU
9. HoMM 3 (if that counts as 4X/4X-lite)
10. Gal Civ 3

My list is overall a tight race, and I’d say EL is the first honorable mention at a solid 11 though. I’m not the biggest fan but I enjoyed playing the Roving Clans enough, plus I see how good the game is (just not 100% for me). Other mentions include ISG, and probably a few others I forgot about.

It is. But it's a hit or miss. Though, no one will argue that it is beautiful with amazing music. That's not arguable at all.
