Agreed. That's who I voted for.
I personally think that 2017 Stellaris is going to be much better than 2016.
I also think Stellaris 2018 will be when it really starts burning red hot.
THat sounds good to me. Right now, it's got a slow brn going. It's getting better for sure.
I'm very curious to see if Amplitude can hit as many high notes as they have with EL with ES2. Exciting studio to watch right now.
If that's the game of the year, then what that tells me is that 2017 must have been a pretty shitty year for 4X games.
On the other hand. I don't get that vibe at all when I read MOO:CTS reviews especially since the DLC. We all see the spurned fanboy reviews screaming for MOO2, of course, but then there's a lot of "I have a lot of fun playing this game".
I think 2016 was a great year for 4x.
Despite harsh criticism from the peanut gallery both Stellaris and NuMoo were received very well.
We got some good indie games like PS.
Several expansions came out for existing games that added a ton of content. EL tempest comes to mind as our expansion of the year winner.
Not to mention very anticipated games coming to EA , like ES2 and Sis.
Oh and Civ 6
Speaks for itself but I think 2015-2018 are going to be the golden years of 4x
Our reeXamination is in the last stage of editing and will be up this week.
I don't think that's the consensus at all. Maybe on these boards, but 87% of the 10k reviews its gotten on Steam are positive and of the 1200+ reviews Stellaris has gotten recently, 90% have been positive. I think the consensus is that it's a good game now and it will also get better as time goes on. Sure, the game has flaws, all games do. But Stellaris is good now and will be better later.
Actually the general consensus is that it is by far one of the best games in the entire genre ALREADY... and only getting better. I mean no game is perfect, but it is undeniably one of the best space 4x games.
it might become a decent victoryless empire simulator though if they make the act of sitting there watching things unfold interesting enough
Nah. I think a lot of detractors will be singing a much different tune by the end of 2017 when it comes to Stellaris.
Although if you are avidly convinced Stellaris is a bad game , odds are nothing will change your mind.
For the rest of us , it's an exciting time because of how Stellaris has improved with every patch /DLC.
In the meantime, what are your candidates and why did you pick them.
Really curious to read this.

- Endless Space 2
- Oriental Empires
- Sovereignty: Crown of Kings
