Starbase Orion 2 Megathread

Alright, I'll get this out of the way: Starbase Orion (an iOS only MoO2 successor) remains probably my favorite space 4X game. It's just really well designed through and though.

Starbase Orion 2 has long been in the works from creator Rocco Bowling - although not much information has been released. Well, turns out he has been releasing updates and teasers over in a reddit forum:

If you scroll down to page 2 you'll see some posts from beatthebrush (the developer) showing images and WIP's for the new UI and other features.

Starbase Orion 2 is, I believe, planned to be cross-platform (iOS, Android, and Windows)

Thanks. I credit Starbase Orion with getting me back into 4X games and evne PC games more broadly. I went through a period from about year 2000 to 2011 where i wasn't playing many strategy games at all. None quite engaged me as much as Alpha Centauri did at the time. I dove much deeper in boardgames and also played a lot more FPS + RPG computer games (Elder scrolls, etc.).

Anyway, when I finally got a smartphone I stumbled onto Starbase Orion and was hooked. That led me back to thinking about and playing PC strategy games and I am.

Starbase Orion, as the article said, really cooked the core 4X / moO-like experience down to its core elements and the UI was shockingly effective at facilitating the gameplay. There are design innovations in SO that, despite me frequently directing developers to consider, still haven't been picked up by bigger titles. The customizalbe build-queue system, the orders-based battle structure, optional cloud based AI processing (yes really), the approach to research. Lots of good stuff in the game.

I liked the look of the combat model in 1 but not sure about these rather dated looking 3d models for 2.Sometimes less is more.

People have spoken positively of pt I and the mechanics sound interesting. But (un-)fortunately I don't have any Apple products to try it.
