Steam controller with big picture stuck in background input
Using big picture mode with my steam controller on one of my boxes results in an odd behavior. Everything works until a game is launched, the inputs will not go to the game and you can hear the big picture menu sounds in the background and input sounds as if you are controlling stuff in big picture still(and if you use a keyboard to tab out, it IS controlling big picture, even though a game is open). Pressing the steam button will pop up the menu which works and allows configuring the controller and closing the game. Holding the steam button for global input does allow inputs. It's as if when a game is launched steam big picture mode is suddenyl returning like the game closed even though it has not. I tested this with many game in my library none work. This only occurs on this computer it seems. My others dont do this, any help?

Launching games from the steam client works but this is my living room system

It sounds like something is cause focus detection to not work properly on that machine and Steam doesn't recognize any game windows as belonging to a game. You could check if you're running any software known to interfere with Steam from this list:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289
Or make support ticket on the help site and an Steam Support agent and they can walk you through making a system report to check for interfering software.

Hi, this PC has nothing installed except for steam, VLC, and Google chrome.

I agree it seems to be a focus detection issue, is there any way to troubleshoot it? Running Windows 10 2019 Enterprise build, using Intel HD graphics.

This is a fresh install, I'll pull you the system info soon

UPDATE2: Ignore the first update I have found the source of the bug. Some of my games require me to run lower resolution settings that what i run the system at. Here's an example

My system runs at 1920x1080, which is what big picture mode runs at
If i start Sanctum a fullscreen game at 1920x1080, my input works perfectly fine

HOWEVER

If i start sanctum or change the resolution to 1280x720, the input issue occurs

So if i run any of my games at a different resolution than my desktop, it causes a focus issue, probably because the resolution changing causes it to lose this focus?

Is this only an intel HD graphics issue?

I'm not sure. I wasn't able to reproduce this at my desk with a discrete graphics card in either the desktop overlay or BPM overlay. I'd be surprised if the graphics card had any impact on the focus tracking part of the overlay though. I'll let you know if I can think of other troubleshooting steps.

I was NOT able to reproduce this on a desktop with discrete graphics either. Is this possibly an issue with the intel HD driver?

It does work in desktop overlay, it's a problem only in BPM

I'm having the same issue for one of my games, still no solution?
Nairehd Feb 19, 2023 @ 2:34am
I was able to solved by unchecking the "Run as administrator" pop up, it looks like when I run it from steam big picture, when the pop up appear of enable changes on the device, it will loose the focus.

I am also having the same issue. I just disabled menu sounds.
Zidake Jul 22, 2023 @ 11:58am
Any new information on that topic? I have the same issue now. Played a game on my NVIDIA Shield with steam link, and while in BGM I tabed out on my PC because I had to look up something. Since then I can't controll any game on my TV anymore. The game launches, but while using the controller you can hear the menu in the background of the Big Picture Mode. The inputs doesnt effect the game however. Can't get it back to work.
Also tried the Resolution thing and disabling menu sounds. that didn't help either..

EDIT//
I found a solution. I installed the BETA Steam Client and now it works properly.
