Locally cache Game thumbnail images
When i use big picture, none of my game images are avaliable at first. It seems to have to load each image in and this can take an age. On scrolling down my games list the images have to load even more and then when i scroll back up.. the images are missing ( most of them )

I don't know if this is default behaviour as it as always happened. But would it be so hard to locally store a folder with the game thumbnails inside that can be remotely updated if needed as and when ? It doesn't look very 'slick' and 'console like' to have to wait an age to see what games you are highlighting in your library, dozens of blank tiles looks kind of jank tbh. Consoles manage this fairly easily, why not big picture mode.

thx

apologies if it's just my setup.

No problem here since I upgraded my internet subscription, I have around 300 games. I used to notice this problem when downloading content like a game and start browsing the library or store. Back then I used the max download bandwidth in Big Picture to solve the problem.

Nevertheless cached copies would be nice.

Agreed. faster internet removes or reduces the problem im sure.
I guess valves headquarters has a fast pipe (no pun intended) . Not everyone has the luxury of that.

BTW although it might not be most peoples use case .. but if your playing an offline game or your internet is out then all you have is blank tiles. Or perhaps your taking your machine to a place that has little to no internet ( some boring summer vacation your parents dragged you on ) or your not wanting to sign into some crappy spyware hotel wifi etc. Then you get the blank look.

Cached copies save on bandwidth too as they have to reload every time you run big picture. Being cached they could in theory be higher quality and even animated.

thx

I totally agree with you. I have Exede satelite internet I only get 10gigs per month with late nite freezone "12 A-5 A" every morning. that is when I do all of my downloading so after my 10 gig are gone I get kicked down to less then dailup speed. Whoild really be nice to have all those cached locally instead of redownloading everytime you start BPM.

Set custom images for all your games. Download all the games banner images from their store page in a web browser. Set custom image for every one of them and they'll technically be "cached"

Absolutely, please! I have a PC that I use as basically a game console and will sometimes bring it with me to places, meaning that I don't always have an internet connection. Navigating through games in BPM without icons is an absolute nightmare.

I've used steamgrid and I think it's a good program, but you have to keep using it to keep game icons up to date(as some will change at times). Also, I did have it set to run in Windows task scheduler to automatically clear the grid images folder and then run steamgrid, but Windows decided to delete BOTH the schedule entry and the .bat file that I made for it. In addition, it's not a good solution for most people.

We need caching as a feature, not band-aid solutions around it.

Agree. It doesn't look too great showing off your Portable PC setup to your friends to encourage them to use Steam with all the blue placeholder tiles. Looks a bit amateur hour. I can see why they originally did it but id like to see high quality and even animated cached game application launchers.

btw Im using Linux so i cannot use those windows workarounds. And after all, Valves console SteamOS and their future vision for PC gaming is somehow using Linux.

thx

yea It would be a positive thing. Although Im not sure if Valve devs look into these forums.

You could even add recent updates to the banner and perhaps even a notification of new DLC ? Animated tiles would look super cool also.

For anyone interested, there's an app that downloads all the banners and place it directly into the grid folder:
