I don't like the need to use Big Picture for a controller
It would be nice if you wouldn't force big picture mode on people who want to use their controllers on their PC's.

Also it would be nice if you could unhardbind the ps/guide buttons from big picture mode. It removes the ability for us to use the guide button as a push-to-talk in programs like mumble etc.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-11-22-steam-still-at-50-million-users-500-000-use-big-picture

it would be nice if the majority of your community wouldn't suffer for this niche project that very few find enjoyable on their desktop PCs.

I think big picture is great while my laptop is plugged into my TV in the living room and I'm gaming, but I never want to see it on my desktop.

You dont have to use Big Picture mode with controller on desktop :

-You can start game straight from desktop !

-If you have to make adjustments for controller, alt+tab back to desktop. Click mouse2 the game you are playing... there is a shortcut for that !!

-Yes, the GUI is "Big Picture" but it is possible to launch also windowed mode like 1066X600 so it is like any pop up window for settings !!!

This works at least with Steam Controller !!!!

Those things work fine.

My big issue is the guide button, by removing my ability to rebind it they have removed functionality from my controller. I have to use a 3rd party program and emulate my ds4> 360 controller just so steam doesn't take control of the guide button.

People have been complaing about this for over 5 years. Steam needs to realize Big Picture is a Big fail it should be an optional part of the install and it certainly shouldn't take precendence over my ability to customize my controller how I want.

This is the whole point of PC gaming. Hardbinding buttons removes functionality. It's a horrible idea. Whoever thought "People don't use the guide buttons" is an idiot.

What prevents you binding any other button for your needs ?

What controller are you using ?

Cheddar Feb 10, 2017 @ 11:13am
Dualshock 4 , I have a friend who has apparently rebound the button. He's going to help me out.

Hopefully I can get it to work. The entire process is overly complicated. Steam controller support needs to be simplified greatly.

It also needs some sort of help that's functional, it may have great abilities and customzation options but they aren't explained well to someone who's new.

Your right about poor guides but one reason for that is Valve is adding almost weekly new stuff to controller(s) options. Pc gaming is still DIY hobby. Many things has to dig out by yourself.

Are you familiar about Activators ? It is possible bind multiple actions in one button... so personally I dont see any problems that one (guide) button is locked to do just one purpose.

In fact I like how is it done with Steam Controller. I am using guide button to power my pc wirelessly. Console style. It is possible only with Steam Controller if motherboard support certain feature.

ok. So it's been figured out, it's far too complicated.

Enter BPM, go to controller settings, make sure the PS4 Configuation settings box is unchecked, then click the PS4 controller below on that same page. It provides options to change every button on the controller.

How unintuitive is it that if I click Ps4 configurations settings box and then click the controller on that same page the only options I get are for the light bar and rumble, and the ability to name my controller.

This is aboslutely horrible implementation. It's not user-friendly at all and the reason so many have chose to stick with things like inputmapper/ds4w/motionjoy etc.etc.etc.

If I wasn't a masochist i would have given up after spending hours in the steam controller style menus trying to figure that overcomplicated ♥♥♥♥ out.

I've managed to unbind the guide button and get it working in mumble (as generic button 12 it no longer recognizes it as a guide button at all), but it no longer works in any games and detects the ds4 as a logitech pad half the time and a generic pad the other half. I'm done steam controller support is absolutely garbage at this point. Oh and I lose function of my track pad completely. My freind says his works wired, I'm trying over Bluetooth and imagine that's whats screwing me.

When I turn on PS4configsupport it refuses to save any changes made to any config. This is garbage software, how did this make it out of beta?

If i use steams controller support I can not use my controller how I have been using it for years. I lose customizability. a bunch of buttons do things I don't want them to do and my changes to configs won't save to stop it from happening. Hardbound buttons are ridiculous and absolutely should not EVER be a thing.

That and I have to use BPM which is just garbage on a desktop PC monitor. If I put it in windowed mode my mouse doens't line up with the mouse in BPM. Like FFS. what the hell steam? this is stuff I'd expect in 2004.

This is buggy ass software that isn't worth anyones time. Make it an optional install for people that want to have the "Steam Beta TV experience" while the rest of us can use steam without it as we have for years.

I have spent far too many hours trying to get something working taht supposedly made it out of Beta.... I don't think it did.

I'd like to add, with input mapper running all I have to do is turn on my controller bind the button in mumble and I'm done. controller works in every single game.

I guess I'll donate some more to inputmapper, I didn't realize how much of a headache a free program has saved me until I tried to use steam, which I've given hundreds of dollars to over the years.

What is the keybindings combo you start Mumble ?

Add that to any other button than guide button... problem solved !

Are Activators familiar to you ?

edit: I just watched some guide about making shortcuts to mumble.... pretty simple....

1. Make suitable keyboard combo bindings to use Mumble
2. Add those bindings with help of Activators to your controller.
3. Enjoy playing and using Mumble without touching Guide button.

I don't want any combos' I don't want to launch anything via any button on my controller.

I want to unbind steam from the guide button so it can be used. Right now you no programs even recognize a button is being pressed because steam is highjacking it for the hardbound steam overlay. The same way that Microsoft game for windows does until you turn it off.

Why you are so fixed to Guide button ?

I gave you an solution. I can not do any more.

You know you can just uncheck "guide button focuses on Steam" in the controller settings right?
When i do this, I press the guide button and it does not bring up Big Picture.
After that just start the game before turning the controller on. (Most Xinput games should have no problem with this.)
Cheddar Feb 10, 2017 @ 9:08pm
You didn't give me a solution. You typed some mumbo jumbo. Nothing you said pertains to my problem, you also ignore the fact I can't save configuration changes in ps4configuration mode.

I want to use guide as push to talk, it's that simple. If I am in a steam game the guide button brings up the overlay because it is hardbound. You can not rebind the guide button if you have Ps4configuration selected, if it's not selected games don't recognize the controller at all, so the controller doesn't work.... The only way to bind my guide button is to lose all functionality of the controller in game, the push to talk button works for mumble though YAY.... ./s

If I am on desktop and have a steam window selected it will launch big picture, again if the ps4cfgmode is selected, if not it works like it should but the controller again doens't work in games. Regardless of whether that whole "Guide button focuses steam" is checked or not. It most certainly launches big picture for me. The only thing that setting changes is if I don't have a steam window selected it won't open steam.

Why am I so fixed on the guide button? Because it's the only button that is unbound for every single game. It's the perfect push to talk button. But for some reason Steam chose to take control of it much the same windows 10 Xbox app does and highjacks the input for it's own purposes.

In windows 10 you can stop it from highjacking the input and then use the button for whatever you want. So in order to use my controller how I want to use my controller on my PC i have to emulate my DS4 as a 360 controller through 3rd party software.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamController/comments/5agpxu/post_any_bugs_you_find_here_using_the_dualshock_4/

You need to realize that this entire thing is broken. I wouldnt' call this ds4 support. I call this a headache.

All they needed to do was make the DS4 work. Not add steam controller functionality to the DS4, it's not a steam controller. If I wanted that I would have bought that, in fact I specifically didn't want that.

Like I said I'll stick with inputmapper because it works, it works for every single game. If I want to change a button to a different button it's easy. If I want to unbind a button it's easy. It sucks that steam added DS4 support before it was ready, it should have stayed in beta for a long long while until all these bugs were sorted.
