Oldnet Archival/Recycling Program

Hey guys, it's Gradual.

Summer of 2017 is proving to be the summer of archival revival for me. I have one last large scale release left in me, and I want to take the information we have of all our favorite chat clients, and archive them to the level we achieved with Worlds.

1st Research Papers PDF:

I would like to create a crude archival in the old HTML style we know and love, and I'm hoping there are still people interested in this subject. Even if not, it's still an important project to me that I feel I need to finish.

This link above is the invite link to my new Discord channel, which will focus on the development of OA/RP (Oldnet Archival/Recycling Program) -- my last effort to create an archival space for old virtual worlds.

OA/RP

The goal: To coherently document all remaining virtual worlds, even in redundancy, to give context for future generations of people who wish to remember the golden age of the internet. These programs laid the foundation for gaming, socializing, and much more.

The idea: My vision of the final hub is to mimic the designs and simplicity of GeoCities and early HTML design of the 90's. In a primarily HTML site, you will be able to access a complete database of worlds from Worlds Player and Traveler, as well as the history and historical context of both programs. More than these two platforms will be documented, but they are the immediate focus as they both still have active servers and rely on individual files for their environments as opposed to open world.

The first step: Currently, the project will be spearheaded by myself and a few friends. I'm open to suggestions and will accept any submissions from you guys. That includes, but not limited to:

  • .world or .dsv files with information of their origin
  • Screen shots with appropriate information attached
  • Archived web pages that house lost data (WayBack machine)
  • Information/resources pertaining to other programs (esp. dead servers)
  • Cyber Net's rated R servers (I only have a few screens)
  • etc.

Until the site is designed and we have a structure to fill with information, we will simply be gathering everything we possibly can that pertains to this project.

Please, only serious inquiries. The same applies for the Discord channel.

I'll be in touch.
