Mic cutting in and out in recording
All of my steam recordings have my microphone cutting in and out at random. This seems to be a problem with steam not picking up my voice, however this isnt a problem for me on Discord. Also, I have the sound threshold turned off and the gain on my mic in steam turned up.

same issue here, my voice sounds robotic and burst sometimes, but in discord, nvidia overlay and other apps it sounds clean

I was having the same problem. In Steam try turning off the Automatic Gain Control in the Recording Settings. That fixed the for me.
I will give this one a try
Turning off automatic gain control didn't work for me, personally. Even with my mic levels cranked it doesn't really pick up my voice well at all.
i have been having those setting off on everything. my mic works perfect with discord, steam, any game i play, and even on google chrome. it cuts off just like that one post was saying "th- is -at i -ound -ike" in steam's clipping/recording software. i have automatic gain control off, and i have messed with every setting possible on steam to see if i can get it to not cut out. (of course i set it all back when it didnt work...) but even after touching all the settings, my voice still cuts out.
I solved the problem by increasing the gain of my microphone, because of this I'm certain that Steam recording is using the volume threshold even if it's disabled.

I am using an audio interface (Focusrite – Clarett+ 2Pre) and a studio microphone (sE Electronics – sE2200), so that's how I was able to increase the gain on my end. I'm sure there are ways to do that with any headset mic aswell, but you'll have to figure out how your specific equipment works, but atleast this is a clue for anyone out there.
my problem just fixed itself, i wanted to try what you tried but i guess i didnt need to. i bet it had something to do with a steam restart along the way.... which i should have done after changing my mic settings a couple times. also restarting pc may help for those who are still looking for fix.
Weird, there haven't been any Steam client updates in a few weeks.
Having a lot of the same issues myself. Mic cuts in/out of the recording. If I set the steam recording to game audio only it records no sound at all. If I set it to all system audio it picks up the game audio but no audio from other programs like discord. Tried changing every setting I could find in both steam and windows but no change made any difference in this behavior.

I'm starting to think this feature might be bugged with Windows 11. I have a friend who has it working perfectly for them, I even copied their settings and it still don't work for me. Big difference being they are on Windows 10. I'm on a brand new computer too its a fresh install and everything. My audio works just fine for every other application

I can attest it is not a windows 11 thing since I'm still on 10 and have never gotten it to work
im on win 10 too
On a fresh new machine with W11, new headset.
Tested all permutations of these suggestions and get the exact same result.
No issues outside of game recording
not sure if anyone is still having this issue but for me it works if i use push to talk instead of open mic. that is the only time my mic is fully clear, which sucks bc i dont want to constantly hold a button to talk in my recordings.

I wonder how well that would work to verify with the Steam Deck? I'll see if I can verify it later.

I'll try this
I'm still getting this problem. Adjusting the mic settings under the Microphone tab doesn't seem to have any effect on recording.
