[BUG] "An error occurred playing this saved recording"

Games this happened in: Black Mesa, Counter-Strike 2, Left 4 Dead
Other recording software used: none at the time of this bug happening

Looking at the background recording of my games, thumbnails and capture looks correct, so do timeline markers for achievements.
However, when playing the background recording, the "An error occurred playing this saved recording" message will appear on screen and video will not play.
This bug appears seemingly at random, some parts of a recording can be playable without issue while other parts of the same recording may be unplayable.
Hovering the unplayable parts of the recording in the timeline will still show image previews, so I'm guessing the actual recording could be in tact and the issue might be with the Steam media player.

Some additional information:
This bug was probably introduced on the Steam Recording official release on the 5th of November, or in the 6 weeks leading up to it - I can't narrow the exact update because I went some time without using this feature, and when I turned it back on on November 6th. this bug was new.

Chiming in to say I have same issue, nothing fixed it. Not related to the storage because i've moved the recording folder to 3 different drives to no avail.

i got a fix use an ssd and it works for me

I've always used an ssd and it still doesn't work, guess the devs use this as a test bed and didn't really wanted to go further

If you save the entire video as a clip then export it to a file on your computer you can watch it as normal. Has been working well for me. (1/24/25)

you can always export the video directly but it just takes ages to export + you lose the tool to clip parts

Joining the comments thread to say I've had this exact issue since the day it was added to my client. Real shame as I LOVE the notion of this feature and could see myself using it an absolute ton, but this bug is making it near-useless to me at the moment. Hopefully a fix is found or released at some point...

Just to toss my hat in, I started getting this issue after I put in a new hard drive, switched that to be my recording drive, and upped the recording time to 300 minutes. Video will play and I can see the preview image on the timeline but if I try to jump around in the time line I get the error.

Not sure if the bug is still around for you guys, but it doesn't work for me. They are definitely saved, but I cant view them.

it is, the issue is that it takes ages to export the video and u dont even have access to the clip tool when u export so u have to clip blindly or export the entire thing

What is up, it's ya boi, bumping this in the hopes of getting a response. This still happens across EVERY game. Tried swapping which drive the recording goes to, tried swapping in and out of beta, tried wiping every recording and starting fresh.
