Suggestion: Hotkey to "Clip" the last X amount of background recorded video automatically.
A great option would be, for those using the "always on" recording, it would be nice to have a hotkey and duration setting for the user to be able to bind that will simply save a video clip of the last specified amount of recorded video, similar to how the Nintendo Switch's share button works.

The current system, making markers and whatnot, does work, but it necessitates the user interacting to actually create the video, which they may not want to interrupt gameplay to do, and if their recording-length is shorter than 120 minutes or the user is playing a long session, by the time they think to do it, it may already be gone.

This kind of Instant Clipping I would posit as the single most important missing feature from this, from my testing.

EDIT: WE DID IT GUYS

For me, this is the only reason to use recording at all.

Good guy Valve doing all the hard work with the GPU capture, transcoding, timeline markers, clipping, sharing from Steam Deck, etc., only the fumble and not provide the easiest functionality: press a key and it auto-saves the last 30 seconds. You know, just like screenshots. :cozytf2mug:

P.S. Also, no way I'm going to thrash my SSDs for the rare occasion I'd like to clip something: provide RAM-only recordings.

Using Windows DVR until this gets properly implemented, this is a must have feature.

Personally i'd like it so that you can choose a range of time before and after a mark is set to keep footage, but still work in the same system it currently does. So if I choose to keep say 5 minutes before and after a mark (make both minutes before and after editable), anything that doesn't satisfy that gets deleted. Right now if I put a mark and than pass the default 2 hour threshold, the mark stays, but the footage is gone, with the current fix being to keep large amount of footage. With the way I described, the last 5 minutes of footage would only be kept for the current game and only permanently kept once I or the game sets a mark (and then make sure to keep 5 after). So if in a 4 hour session I make 2 marks, rather than keeping 4 hours of footage in the end, I only keep at max 20 minutes in this case.

I like that the feature doesn't use my ram and that it makes it easy to make clips as long or a short as I want after the fact (had times where I saved a clip using game bar, and wished I could go back a little more, but also had to keep length low because of ram usage). Although I think those features are also good options for people who can take advantage of it (lots of ram) or just want immediate clips.

This is basically "save x minutes of gameplay" everyone wants.

It saves X minutes, it sticks and it doesn't get overwritten.

Yeah, this is probably also the only thing keeping me from using the otherwise pretty neat-looking Game Recording feature.

So yeah, basically add another recording mode for clips, and allow people to choose either to use RAM or their SSD (if they don't have enough RAM), and then just pick a "clip length" in the same way that the "Record in background" recording mode works.

Really need this

Using RAM would defeat the purpose of what this is doing. It's not meant to be recording your 1 session its meant to persist up to whatever you set the buffer to. This is why you can go back and edit video across multiple games if its within that buffer. If you save it to RAM its going to clear the moment your RAM clears such as on reboot and in order to prevent this you would then need to bring that diskbased buffer back which would again defeating the entire purpose of moving it to RAM.

Why do people keep saying this? This is how NVIDIA ShadowPlay and Xbox Game Bar both work. The only difference is Valve keeps the buffer across multiple games while those programs are deleting it on exit. It's not 2013 anymore SSDs arent stupid fragile wrt to write operations. If they were Windows 10 and 11 would be SSD killers as they do more write operations on any given day than a random Defrag would.

While I have always preferred the current implementation, I agree this should be an option.

Must have missed this post when I made mine.
This is definitely the best thing that can be done with the recording system as it is now.

Part of why this is so essential is that clutch plays are often from high intensity games or sequences, and wanting to preserve those moments while also not having the ability to pause or let your team down AFTER your clutch play because you're busy clipping in your steam overlay is really, really helpful. I would absolutely like this feature the most!

Surprised this hasn't been prioritized given the sheer number of threads and people asking for this. Valve, you guys should 100% be pushing this to the top of the list for this feature, along with allocating and recording into memory instead of storage.

Thanks for all the awards fellas, I still can't believe they haven't prioritized adding this, what is going on over there valve? This is like, the number 1 most requested feature easily, this thread has like 20 duplicate threads all of people complaining, it's so blatantly obvious, it's insane that this wasn't the first thing implemented

I think they will, it just needs time. We are just few weeks in since they introduced Game Recording.

Would also be great if you could name those clips after you close the game, like how steam shows screenshots you took during your gaming session and have the ability to name them there. That way you dont have to go to the folder in windows explorer and find the clip you wanna rename.

+1. Absolutely essential feature.

Yes, this is a must. Place a marker and record the X minutes clip before the marker.
