'There was a problem loading this screenshot' - Problem deleting from disk
Deleting screenshots from the disk location used to work fine on the old version as the screenshot manager would update (after a steam restart) and the ones you deleted from the disk location would show in the screenshot manager as black thumbnails with an exclamation mark in a triangle, and then you could delete those thumbnails from the screenshot manager.

New screenshot manager still updates to show which ones have been deleted from the disk location in the same way, but when you try to select one of them (the thumbnails with exclamation triangle) in the manager, it just says 'There was a problem loading this screenshot' and you can't actually click on/select it and delete it from the screenshot manager anymore. So these exclamation triangle thumbnails just stay in the screenshot manager amongst all your screenshots permanently as of now, with no way to remove them.

Also, re-adding/adding a screenshot to the disk folder isn't adding it into the screenshot manager like it used to.

Looks like a couple of oversights that should work as before.
The new screenshot manager is much better now for viewing images larger, but even when you make the manager fullscreen there is so much blank space below the main image (1440p monitor) that could be used to view the image larger, then it wouldn't be so neccessary to go to the disk location anymore. Cheers.

I also made the mistake of deleting the local file of a screenshot, and I'm now unable to delete the broken screenshots from the manager.
Also if you delete (from disk location) the most recent screenshot you have taken, (the one that would appear first when opening the manager) you are completely unable to select any screenshots at all in the screenshot manager, it just shows the exclamation mark triangle as the main image and 'There was a problem loading this screenshot', and you can't view anything else.
I've only just tried sorting through the screenshots directly though the Steam app itself for the first time (usually, I'd just open the folder location) and I found your page via a few ''problem loading this screenshot' images that I can't select but these were from a couple of years back, files that I must have moved instead of copy & pasted.

Also, not only does the current image deselect and return to the top each time a single image is deleted (long, slow process) but, if I delete an uploaded image to return it to the regular list, it disappears entirely from the list in Screenshot Manager but is still in the folder and thus can't be accessed again in the app. Stoopid.
Having this same issue as well as being unable to upload screenshots in general. I found a way to fix the screenshot selection issue at least is to select all/deselect all, which sets it back to a neutral state. Or you can also hold CTRL and click on a screenshot, and then click it again after. They need to fix this.
I seem to have found a solution: When this happens, take a new screenshot, and then delete it through the screenshot manager. For some reason, this seems to refresh the list and removes any dead screenshots still lingering. It seems that in order to avoid this bug, you have to delete screenshots from the manager and not from the disk yourself. I'm thinking it has something to do with the 'screenshots.vdf' file.

There's a workaround this. While holding shift, select two screenshots (which you didn't delete). One before and one after your deleted screenshot. That way the screenshot you removed through your disk location also gets selected. Now just deselect the two screenshots and delete what you wanted to.
Hey cheers, but the shift method (holding shift, selecting 1 before and 1 after the dead screenshot and then unselecting those 2) seems to only half solve it. It does select the dead screenshot, but once its selected, all the options like delete disappear.
Honestly though if you want to get technical and solve it entirely without having to do these workarounds, you can just open the screenshots.vdf file with Wordpad in your Steam screenshots root, and delete all of the data within the brackets that is listed underneath of the corresponding game ID that contains the missing reference(s). Then close and re-open Steam and it should no longer have the dead screenshot preview as now you have deleted the data from the .vdf file that was referencing something no longer on your disc.

It seemed to work for me a while ago. But yeah the delete option disappears now

Oh I didn't know you could do this, thanks
Same here. Found the workaround to remove them via BPM, hence there we can select them — deleted screenshots and delete via Steam now. The problem is you have to do it 1 by 1. But when using controller you're getting back to previous screen shot. So then you can remove the next black one.
The shift method work really well. Thank you.

THANK YOU!!! This was driving me up the wall.

As for the "delete" option, I only clicked on the small trash can icon, and it worked.
bro ever since the new UI steam has been so buggy and its mad annoying
I deleted the screenshots.vdf and solved it. But before that I moved all my local screenshots elsewhere and now there are only the uploaded ones in the manager. Editing the .vdf sounds painfull so I'll just start fresh and avoid deleting locally in the future.
