Steam Cloud error : "timed out"
Hello,

I'm mainly experiencing a problem with 2 games that generate large save files:

Divinity: Original Sin 2
Baldur's Gate 3

As I have a connection with slow Upload (probably all the people who encounter this problem are on ADSL) and the saves generated by Larian Studios are getting bigger and bigger.

In the log file "cloud_log.txt" I see the error message "timed out". The connection is closed by the remote host when the transfer takes longer than expected (probably 60 seconds).

If I only make 1 or 2 saves during a game session, it usually works, but if there are more saves I'm then forced to restart the sync with the cloud multiple times for the save to complete. I don't know whether this is linked to a transfer resumption that gradually makes the files complete at the hosts, or whether it's linked to a particular host (I've found that backups are stored at Google, Amazon, Microsoft).

I notice that many people complain about a problem with Steam Cloud backup on the BG3 discussion and end up disabling the cloud, but that's not a good solution.

Would it be possible for Steam's development department to take care of this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bonjour,

I'll second this. My issue has been with Baldur's Gate 3 since launch - early access, really - not being able to upload cloud saves. I made a form post about it on the Steam page for it, which I will copy here:

Can't Upload/Sync to Cloud

NOTE: THIS IS NOT REFERRING TO THE IN-GAME 'TRYING TO SYNC' BUG THAT PROHIBITS MANUAL OR AUTOSAVES, THIS IS OUT OF GAME

Anyway, with that said. Title, pretty much. Game seems stuck at 100% whenever it attempts to upload or sync to the cloud, then after a while, it gives a cloud sync error and fails. Did a couple of things to try to make it upload, but no dice: manually turned off Larian cross-saves in the menu, deleted every other save besides my current one, turned cloud saves off and on again a few times. Nothin'. Anyone else experience this issue that may have a solution?

It depends on the problem. If it's related to a disconnection by the remote server due to a too long upload, reducing the number of backups to be synchronized should solve the problem.

In my case, with 133 Mb/s upload speed, I can usually send 2 backups without error.

I can testify it's the same for me. The only solution I've found was to disable it for BG3 and now I have no issues on this.

i have the same issue for BG3 since their last update. no issues on other games atm.

currently running BG3 without steam cloud.
Glad to know it's a somewhat of a common issue but one that hasn't been mentioned by either Steam or Larion. Suffering from the same thing where it just doesn't sync at all. Ended up just disabling Cloud Save altogether since it also doesn't like it when you play offline. End up deleting progress just to sync to what it was before.

Many people disable cloud backup. Not only does this not solve the problem, but it also means taking a big risk of losing many hours of progress in the event of a problem on your PC.

As far as I'm concerned, before quitting the game each session, I have to delete most of my saves waiting to be synchronized, leaving only the last 2. This technique allows me to avoid spending many minutes manually restarting the synchronization when it is in error.

I'll be honest: I don't know what to do anymore! I've had this Unable to Sync Cloud error ever since I played the first time. Even when I disabled the Cloud ENTIRELY, the pop-up sometimes appear! I fear to delete my progress because currently, it is my 3rd playthrough of the game. I want to finish doing the Achievements before I do something so drastic! It's so annoying that this is the only game on my Library that is causing me this problem! Activating Cloud again doesn't help since it doesn't sync and doesn't even let me play the game normally. I hope someone can tell me what to do in this case!
Just to know, I'm not losing any progress at all: It's just that this pop-up is annoying the hell out of me!

I'm having the same issue. It's stuck uploading at 100% and it's making the game glitchy too. Conversations take about twelve years.

I've been having this issue lately syncing between my windows tower and my macbook. I've tried deleting most of my games, and reducing the ones i have to just latest save only. The side bar will show bg3 syncing at 100%, but never complete.
Sometimes force quitting steam (on my mac, and on the windows pc), then opening steam again and trying to sync again causes the sync to happen at a normal pace.
Hoping Valve will see this: it would be helpful if the cloud sync UI provided more details, such as "uploading 7/15 (312Mbit/s)" or "comparing files (10/30) (1 file/s)". Then we'd have a better idea if it's just being slow or if it's stopped. Thanks!
