Steam Clip Recording Generates Dozens of Clips Randomly

Just wanted to share that as I've been playing Elden Ring, twice now since the recording feature was added, I will suddenly see dozens of "Clip Saved" popups in the corner. I'm playing on a controller and do not have the "Save Clip" bound to a keyboard or controller input.

The one that happened a few minutes ago saved dozens of clips in a 5 minute time window, where each one seemed like it was offset in time by the last and next by half a second. Basically as quickly as the buffer can be written to a file the next clip will start to save.

The only way I can stop it is to quit the game, then go delete the 18 GBs of video generated during a 5 minute boss fight that I didn't want to quit the game over.

Was this something that happened more recently or only when you first started trying the recording program? Does it still do it if you change the settings off of background recording?

It has happened twice since the recording feature was added. Once about two weeks ago and once when I posted. I haven't turned off background recording as I actually like the feature. I just tend to want to pull the clip from it after I close the game rather than use the hot keys for X seconds. Despite that, this issue has happened without any input from me.

Just started happening to me. Unbound the command from the keyboard and the controller, and it's still doing it. Generated about 20 clips in a minute. Steam did have an update today, so I think it must have broken something.

It’s been happening to me for about two weeks now. I also unbound the key to clip things and the issue still happens. Hopefully Steam sees this thread and looks into it.

just saw this for the first time. my fps dipped out of no where and when i checked the overlay it recorded 50+ clips in 10 minutes. i could not escape the overlay and had to restart my PC.

i had no interaction with the overlay before this occurred and don't have keys bound to clip.

im having the same issue!! i was excited to play gta 4 because i loved gta 5's story but it's hard to get immersed when the clip saving sfx keeps playing!! :(

I started having this issue when I started playing GTA IV as well so maybe its specific to certain games?

It should be a common issue not specific to certain games. It happens too when I play Monster Hunter: World as well as Monster Hunter Wilds Beta Test.
The bug can be reproduced by pressing Shift+` to invoke the Discord in-game Overlay
(assuming you also have Discord running in the background and have discord overlay turned on too.) Unbinding the default Steam Recording shortcut doesn't help. I also have controller connected when this bug is triggered. Not sure which one is the main cause.
