Leave or Kick - One year is too long
Can I leave a Steam Family?
Steam Families are intended to contain your immediate family. As who you include in your immediate family can change over time due to growing up, marriage or other events, it is understandable that some day you may need to change to a new Steam Family.

Adults can leave a family at any time, however, they will need to wait 1 year from when they joined the previous family to create or join a new family.

(If leave, wait one year is that correct?)

As it is rare that a family member leaves the family, each Steam Family slot has a cooldown of one year before a new member can occupy that slot.

(If leave, slot family need cooldown and the one who leave need to wait 1 year to join other?)

I accidentally left my Steam Family! Do I have to wait a year to rejoin?
No. You can always rejoin the last Steam Family that you were a member of without waiting, provided that it has less than 6 members when you try.

(???????, rejoin anytime but no more than 6? what about cooldown slot?, so the one who leave can join anytime. but for new person need to wait one year????)

Can I be kicked out of a Steam Family?
Yes, adult family members can kick any family member out of the Steam Family.

(explain too short, what happen after kick, both of them need to wait one year or not?
like slot need to cooldown and person who got kick need to wait one year? and adult can kick each other even the one who join after??????)

P.S. My family is too big and it should more slot or less cooldown, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ one year is too long.

My brother was going to join the family i had made but with a miscommunication, he made his own family and he isn't able to join mine and I'm not able to join his even though we are in the same household.
i think that a ticket system would be ideal to argue your situation

So, my fiance can't join my Steam family for an entire year because... why? This is ridiculous.

She only can't if she was in a different Family or your family is full.
And the year starts when you JOIN a family, not leave it, so it isn't a full year.

1 year is just absurd, we ended up making a mistake adding the wrong people and now we got 1 slot less
I've made some test and seems that the thing about the Slot is not... tha way.

I've made a group and invite 5 accounts, i removed the account 5, then i saw my slot was still there, so i invited a different account.

Then i removed that recently added account, and invited again the account 5.

Seems that the penalty is in the accounts, not the slots

Do you need to kick one for it to work? My family was full, 2 left, but steam says I have to wait until may to invite a new member (I can invite those who left)

One month sounds reasonable to me. There needs to be some sort of restrictions so people aren't flipping up their sharing with multiple people in order to play every game and any game.

Hey guys,

If you leave a family you have to wait a whole year to join a new family?

I am waiting for one of my best friends to have a free slot in his family which should be by July of 2025 and while i wait, I joined the family group of another friend so i just want to clarify that to see if i should be leaving the current family right now or i can stay until the cooldown has passed.

Thank you for your responses!!

1 year from when you joined a family, doesn't matter when you leave.
when someone leaves a family, that slot has 1 year cooldown from when someone left.

ok, so joined a steam family via nephew's request. Didn't realise that it wasn't his creation, and 'adults' were actually his friends and no spaces left (due to someone joining and leaving, it appeared 5/6).
So I had to explain to a 13 year old he can't play my games because of his 14 year old brother for a year. Will someone from Steam please explain to my 13 year old nephew why a year is a reasonable amount of time? Also while I wait 365 days, it makes no difference to the brother if i share or not, whom caused this. Naturally the younger nephew's first impressions are he hates Steam, and has Xbox Gamepass and buys via their store.....
As to why kids can designate themselves adults?????!? why is this allowed, surely just ask for payment details of a previous purchase...?

Sure blame valve that you allowed your child to make his own steam Account instead of making him a child account. Yes child accounts where a thing befor family share.
And you blame valve, that you joined a "family" before making sure who is in it?
Kind of sounds like you are still a child and blame everyone else for your errors.

And most of the time you don't change your family in a year, most of the time it stays the same.
