Xbox guide button not pulling the overlay on new beta

now that we're ditching oldbigpicture in favor of the new beautiful *smack* 😘👌 nbpm I can't seem to make my guide button pull the "steam panel"/"steam overlay"

• already checked the "Guide button focuses Steam" option, also no luck
• already cleared the xbox game bar settings
• already confirmed in joy.cpl that my xbox controller guide button is working and unobstructed as "button 11"

any pointers will be appreciated!

Came here to post this exact feedback. The option to use the big picture overlay in desktop mode when a controller is disconnected has been completely removed from this beta, so only the desktop overlay is available and the guide button does not activate it. I very much like having a controller navigable overlay, so the removal of this feature is very disappointing

I know the feature was removed in Steam Beta Client a couple of months ago, but does anyone know why?

The removal of launching overlay through controller doesn't make any sense to me. Especially since you can still do it through Big Picture Mode. They just stripped the ability out of the Desktop Mode.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's difficult to have the feature implemented with all the new UI changes and it will be added back at a later date after most of the new UI bugs are squashed? I certainly hope that's the case.

what the frig, it makes no sense

I was SO on board with having the same experience on the desktop as I have on my steam deck... checking out guides, game notes and whatnot. I'm using the ♥♥♥♥ out of those new features, so sad we have to boot big picture before launching any game just to be able to access the overlay

isn't there any fix or workaround, maybe?
can't we map "shift+tab" to the guide button or something?

I currently use controller companion... Gonna check it out later if there's any way to tinker with the shortcuts in it.

Good news: in the latest (May 9, 2023) patch, Steam Overlay via controller has been put back in! No idea why they removed it in the first place, but the option is finally back for Desktop Mode. So finally, one of the biggest gripes I've been having with the beta client for months has been fixed!

It should be enabled by default, but to find the setting, go to Steam Settings, click the In-Game left sidebar, and in that section there is a switch called "Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a controller". Make sure that switch is flipped. Now when you play games in Desktop Mode, you can hit your controller's guide button and Steam Overlay will pop up.

It was not turned on by default. Just flipped it and worked great!
Finally got the steam overlay back!
