Steam Client Web Helper using 40% of my GPU
Was noticing items that use GPU acc was chunking when I was playing a game and when I checked found that steam Web Helper was using 40% of my 4070ti. Disabling the GPU acc option resolved the issue, but can we have this fixed? I don't see what it could possibly need that much horse power for.

Also I wasn't using Steam to play the game at the time if that helps

do you both have same version of nvidia driver 31.0.15.3168? googling on it get a lot of results with problems up to CTD

This doesn't seem like typical behavior. I'm running games through Steam, with the overlay up with web browser and guides open and Steam Client WebHelper is only pegging 0.6% on my 3080 with GPU acceleration on. Game is getting 80-90% GPU usage. Maybe it's specific to the particular game you're playing?

@Deadward: The game performance just initially clued them into it happening; it's happening for both of us just at desktop without a game even running in addition to while playing games.

That's why I said it doesn't seem like typical behavior, since it affects some users but not others. If it was typical, it would affect all users. Me saying I'm unaffected is merely a data point.

Download latest beta, disable GPU acceleration.

On the latest beta.

With GPU acceleration enabled:

With GPU acceleration, smooth scrolling, and hardware video decoding all disabled;

GPU usage INCREASED 1% by disabling acceleration lol.

And just to confirm, here's with the normal version of steam. 0% GPU usage, and you'll notice my FPS increased by 36 (the FPS counter is the steam overlay one)

Not sure if you read the post but this was the latest and with GPU acc disabled.

The new client uses CEF and GPU acceleration should ALWAYS be enabled (as the developer says in this thread https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/3/3710433479207750727/ )
CEF has a GPU blacklist - a lot of GPU\video drivers with which it does not work correctly
The CEF currently in use is more than 3 THREE years old - it contains more than a few thousand remote vulnerabilities, several dozen local and a billion XSS vulnerabilities.
Since Valve will continue to support W7 until the end of the year, it is likely that the problem will not be solved until then, unless they return to the practice of using two versions of CEF for different OS (as was the case 5 years ago when Google stopped supporting CEF x86)

So where is problem? GPU acceleration is bugged since years and there is no indication that this will change. It's just Chromium and its shoddy code. Who cares.

Exactly!

This is infact the place where you report performance problems with the beta, in case you forgot where you were. :P

It would be good if you would not put words in my mouth that I have not said. That is not very polite.

BTW: Steam takes around 1% CPU.
