command line option to force original steam controller ui?
i checked sometime ago the beta of the client in windows, to see how the menus worked in the steam deck version. i didnt like how the controller menu was redesigned so i opted out of the beta, and removed the command line option to call the new ui, but that didnt changed anything.

in fact, after a recent client update i found the bpm now calls the new ui, rather than the original one. previously after "opting out", the new controller ui appeared only when i clicked the option in the desktop mode, and the original controller menu and original bpm were still available through the bpm button.

now thats gone, so im stuck with the new ui, and i find it very annoying, because its harder and more cumbersome to navigate, even if it loads faster than the orginal one.

so, is there an option to force the original ui with a command line in the steam shortcut, or a guide to be able to use it?

I don’t know if it’s possible to use the old controller ui with the new bug (this was a typo, but I left it because it fits) picture, but if you’re happy to go back to the old one the -oldbigpicture on the command line is what you want. You might want to stay opted out of the beta for that though as despite what looked like progress in the Feb 9th beta, Valve still hasn’t fixed the blank library bug when using this parameter, at least on my system.

Also, make sure you disable the option to start Steam with Windows, since that’ll start it with the new BPM. If you want Steam to launch with Windows then you need to drop a shortcut with the command line in to your start menus startup folder. Lastly, if you aren’t having Steam start up with Windows, make sure you launch it from a shortcut with the command line before starting any (Steam) games, since when they try and start it themselves they’ll likely launch it with the default settings.

thanks, im goint to try launching steam with that.

im unsure what you mean about the other issues, since i havent experienced them (maybe because im supposedly out of the beta).

i start steam with windows in desktop mode because i use the steam controller as a mouse replacement, and only when steam client loads i can use my settings for desktop, rather than the "basic" settings preloaded in the controller.

-side note-

i hope someone makes a fork or takes over this project from linux, because i found it extremely more useful before the new changes tried to renovate the navigation. its also very useful to use the steam controller (or any other compatible controller) without launching steam (ie games managed via lutris, or other programs)
https://github.com/kozec/sc-controller

theres a windows version that was in beta, which i have checked, but the project seems abandoned (and the windows version isnt very useful because of the bugs). i still recommend the last version available for linux

update for anyone with the same issue:

i also found and tried luck with the option "clearbeta" plus "oldbigpicture" and that worked. so, the shortcut properties in windows, in "target", it looks like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -oldbigpicture -clearbeta

note:
this only helped to revert to the previous behavior: only bpm is the old version, if i try to call the controller settings in desktop mode, the new ui for controller menu still appears.

I have requested a separate launch command for reverting the Steam Input UI accessed from the Game Library (i.e. when selecting "Controller Layout") to the old style since at least November, but Valve do not listen. There are several threads for this already, see my post here, for instance.

There are so many things Valve can fix with some simple launch commands: a proper maximized window mode, removing the What's New section and this. At this point, I think the user experience and the users' actual feedback, apart from bug reports, is of no importance to them. There are so many threads for this already, maybe we can keep using the one I linked to.
