Black Screen Upon Launching New Beta Big Picture Mode
When I go into big picture mode on my desktop, my screen goes black, with some icons sometimes showing up on the sides of the screen. Is anyone else having this issue? When I opt out of the beta, the problem vanishes. Does anyone else have this issue and if so potential solutions?

Edit: I and another commenter with this issue have ultrawide monitors. This may or may not be related to this issue.

Edit: To get the new big picture to work opt out of the beta launch big picture, go to settings, display, interface (order might be off here) and click the box that says something like "start big picture in windowed mode" and then opt into the beta. The new big picture should now work in windowed mode for you. Thanks to Dekau for the fix.

Edit: Courtesy of pupsekuchen; "in the steam overlay settings there is an option, called "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views". Many people have confirmed this works in the comments.

I had library show black only but just restarting steam fixed. That happened after trying the -oldbigpicture to show old big picture ui and then exiting big picture to make steam run in large mode. Just starting steam with the mode you want and not switching to or from big picture may help too.

For me to many small things wrong, broken or missing in newbigpicture i just use steam in large mode, though have been trying newbigpicture more in trying to work out the weird Steam Input bugs am seeing

Using Steam Beta with Linux couldn't fix the black screen on library only fix was to opt out of Beta.

I have had the library issue, and restarting always fixed it. I am just going to use the current big picture for now, but I hope their isn't issues in the future when it is mandatory and the current big picture mode is phased out.

Black screen has been a known issue for a very very long time.

I have the same issue. Black screen on Big Picture mode.

Same here. Ultrawide monitor if it's relevant. Has anyone from Valve acknowledge this?

I also have a UW monitor. Will make an edit.

This is happening to myself as well, tried disabling hardware acceleration but the only thing that seems to work is opting out of the beta

Oddly enough it works fine for me now that I've added the -gamepadui flag to my Steam shortcut. Which I thought was unnecessary now that the new UI is the default, but hey.

Hi, just some info as I'm experiencing the same issue. I do not have an UW monitor on my setup (though I do have multiple)

FOUND A FIX! To not have the black screen, your Steam Big Picture needs to be in windowed mode. For some reason mine switched to it randomly so I went to BP settings and made it to where BP starts up in windowed mode and now it works every time.

Nice, just tried this and it works, super cool to be able to use the same interface as on the deck but on windows. I'll put an edit in the description! Thanks dude!

That'd be a great fix... if it were easier to get to settings while the whole screen is refusing to load lmao

Try adding -nobigpicture argument to your Steam.exe shortcut target. This will start Steam in large mode aka windowed mode

i also need -oldbigpicture argument as well due to the bug ridden mess that is known as newbigpicture which is just part of the fix to get Guide button behaviour working like expected in large, oldbigpicture and newbigpicture ui's as well as in game.
