I feel like the new "gamepad UI" is not user friendly
I say this as a long time Steam Controller user; I bought mine a few months after launch and have basically been using it exclusively since then.

I'm writing this not out of disrespect, but instead hoping to help push towards a UI that would be better both for newer and older users alike. Right now I feel like it is obtuse enough to push new users from wanting to learn how to configure anything and also incredibly frustrating to use for long time returning users...

For the new users the alien language and unintuitive changes are enough to make an already hard learning process far more difficult. I've spent a decent amount of time on Discord trying to help newer users with general Steam Input questions and a lot of the new changes genuinely make it far more complex both to describe how to do things and even figuring it out from the get-go.

For returning users... Making large configurations in most aspects is far more tedious, slow, and simply painful... Subtle things like needing to make more presses to actually apply changes than we used to all seems very needless. I feel like the removal of the ability to view the controller layout and then make changes directly from that map of the configuration genuinely adds a lot of time and also just makes it more unfriendly to use.

(Keep in mind I haven't tried the new percentage sensitivity settings) But prior to that it gave me anxiety. Assuming that it is exactly the same in function as I have on my Steam Deck right now; the way that sensitivities are selected by moving the d-pad or other inputs is incredibly slow until you want it to be fast and then too fast once you wanted to be slow. I find that the way the keyboard works for setting sensitivity, although I can't really put my finger on it right now I found to be confusing. At least for me I think it leads to a lot of accidentally backing out of a thing and makes it kind of a choice between being frustrated one way or the other.

Assuming somebody from Valve actually reads this and has gotten this far; first of all thank you for not leaving... Second of all, I genuinely love Steam Input a lot and just simply want to see it be the best it can for all of the potential use cases as possible.
I appreciate the effort and work that has been put into this revamp, I can tell there's passion in what has been done and there are genuinely major changes that make the experience better; I would just like to see a push to make the UI has it currently stands a lot more user friendly.

It actively makes me not want to tinker with rebinding things. Nothing about it feels like an improvement other than numbers for sliders and touch menu visualization.

While there’s some new features I really like, I think many parts of the UI are not great. It often takes more presses and loading of menus to get something done.

Or my biggest gripe is making it all a list with the labeling of stuff. I found the old UI better in that I moved the cursor over to the physical button I wanted and adjusted it from there.

The preview button is nice to see the whole config, but I found the old navigation around the controller more convenient. With the new config I often feel lost in all these menus.

I like the categorized inputs/fonts, putting in exact numbers on sliders, or how the new virtual menus look and configure great. But the general navigation of the UI doesn’t feel great.

Yeah, the new UI is extremely rudimentary and quite burdensome to its users. It feels like it was thrown together entirely for the programmer's ease of getting something out there, and then just left that way. It's blatantly incomplete in several basic areas (the preview is outright broken, missing and mistaking 360 buttons and ignoring inheritance entirely, and you can't view a config without downloading it and replacing your current config, with no warning even if it is unsaved).

Thank goodness for finally letting us see and set those numbers (how can the bar for progress be this low...), but the rest of this is simply not made to be used, and it is something those of us who use it need to go through a lot of time with.

I had hoped the Deck would finally mean some actual fixes for Steam Input, and I am downright alarmed at what I am seeing here, because you can tell no one who works on this actually uses it, and that way can only mean darkness.

I went straight to your channel to see if you uploaded something about this after the update.

This new UI is not good and it would have been better if they ported the Big Picture one to Deck, improving some areas. Now it looks way more intimidating than before, some functions will probably never be used by new players as they are buried under too many panels and tabs.

I do finally have a Deck but on PC I completely avoid steam input and use reWASD instead. Even on the Deck I'm mostly playing simple games and avoiding having to make robust configurations because the UI is so tedious to navigate.

Thanks for replying. I'm checking some of your videos on reWASD. I will try it later, specially if Big Picture gets completly removed in the future and this new UI is the only thing we have left.
