Playstation 5 DualSense Controller - Layout button prompts
Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 support DualShock button prompts (see https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Red_Dead_Redemption_2#Input expand the DualShock controllers section), but from my understanding, the PS5 DualSense controller is simulating an Xbox controller, which means we lose out on Playstation button prompts.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Is there a way for Steam devs to allow on a per-game basis the PS5 DualSense controller simulating an xbox controller and...not/or a DualShock 4 controller?

I've been using an Xbox controller for over a decade now exclusively so I know all the butons, but even still it trips me up for some reason, especially when the game says to smash X which is in both Xbox and PS layouts.

There are three different options for developers to take:

1. Implementing Steam Input API.
2. Only make the API take glyphs but still remain XInput. (Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy and Yakuza games does it)
3. Adding an ability to manually change Button Prompts in-game. (Death Stranding and selected Ubisoft games allow you to do that)

for the users, you got two options:

1. Download a Mod that replaces Xbox Icons to PlayStation (or Nintendo/Steam Controller)
2. Use Muscle Memory.

Right, thanks for the information.

So I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to add a third option as a user, if Steam devs make it, to where we can have the controller emulate xinput by default for all games, but allow customization on a per-game basis to disable xinput emulation on games that support PlayStation controllers.

This would bypass the probably vast majority of devs that have stopped supporting released games or will never release an update to support Steam input API, but support PS inputs.

Game devs must add/allow the option.

I THINK it would be possible to make Steam emulate a Playstation controller instead of a XInput one. Such an option would be great because it would also allow users to play DS4 and Dual Sense compatible games without giving up Steam Controller configurations.

yeah it shouldn't be too hard for steam to add that option, since more games have native dualshock 4 support these days. Workaround would be to use DS4windows to emulate a DS4 so thats how steam picks it up, but last I tried that they didn't have the touchpad working correctly.
