Maybe off topic, but what's wrong with Discord? I use it daily and am a great fan, so wondering what would cause you to 'greatly dislike' it.
Either way, it would be the same situation as this chat beta if it were to happen (in the unlikely event of). So its features would not be forced onto you. I'd see it as being a feature if you link your Steam account to Discord, something you can do already. That then makes it an option for users with accounts with both, unless Valve wanted to acquire Discord and go full integration.

I never suggested that Steam is the 'bad guy' in any way. I don't think you actually read my post, you just saw the title and copy/pasted what you said in another thread. You are free to dislike Discord, it doesn't matter to me. I'm saying that I don't want every website to clone Discord to a point where I need to open each different application and website just to get what I currently get from Discord. As I've already mentioned, I don't see a problem in Steam's chat being similar to Discord, it's the implications that are created as a result.
Once again, as above, you clearly didn't read my post and just came to ♥♥♥♥ on Discord instead. I never suggested that group chats or image embedding are the reason that this is shaping up to be a Discord clone, nor that it is even a bad thing. I'm not saying that Steam are bad for copying Discord, I'm saying that it creates annoying circumstances as other companies are doing this too.
You don't want every websites to clone Discord (including Steam apparently since you commented about it), but what does it matter when you're still forced to tab out of your game to reply to your friends on Discord instead of Steam? Or when some of your friends message you on Steam instead? You can't help it but play ping-pong from one application to another anyway. How is that every websites? How did its difference in UI change your way of using them the same way as you are now? All Steam did was change its UI and improve the chat and group chat a bit, the rest is pretty much the same. So I think you just wanted to scream about how Steam is trying to do like Discord despite the fact that Steam holds almost all of Discord's features from the very beginning and even more.
I was sort of forced to move to Discord simply because a big portion of my friends who are in my group liked the fact that they're logged to servers automatically as soon as they boot-up their computer unlike Steam group chats were you had to constantly open a group chat manually or create a batch file. They liked the chat history and the ability to have their own emotes to a server and upload files. That's about it. So now that group chat on Steam keep history for 2 weeks or something, why should I keep Discord running in the background and force myself to tab out when everything is now in one place right here on Steam? And why should you? You just answered your own complaint without realizing it. You don't want everyone to do like Discord because you want to keep everything in one place, well there you go! Steam has everything in one place now, so why staying on Discord? Is it because your friends can't leave it and you're forced to move between them and now you're suggesting that Steam should somehow support Discord and open the Discord servers or chat from its own client or something? Because to me, that's exactly what it sounds like.
None of the features in Discord are revolutionary. Most of them were seen in Slack and there is a reason for that; they are features that just make sense for a chat platform to have.
I would pick Valve over Discord any day. Discord can not pay upkeep for its services without gathering and processing user data. Eventually, they will sell out and move on. Valve is much more reliable and less dependant on user data - hence chat logs are only kept for 2 weeks.
Once again, you're making very absent minded assumptions. I never 'left Steam for Discord'. Steam's chat feature was underdeveloped from the beginning, before Discord I used Skype to communicate with my friends to play games or voice call. Once I found Discord it took Skype's place, not Steam's.
My problem with sites cloning Discord is not about the effect it has on Steam but on the fact that I'd need to check many different sites just to get what I currently get from Discord - all my servers in one place.
Yes, Steam just changed their UI. I'm not suggesting that this is a bad thing nor that it's a new thing. I'm simply saying that the direction that they're taking with their new chat is very similar to some things other companies are doing to fill the space Discord is currently filling.
To reiterate, since you're not getting this: I have no problem with Steam's current features nor whether or not it's cloning Discord or not. That's not the inherent problem. My problem is that I don't want to have to juggle each app just to do what I do with Discord currently.
You were not forced to use Discord. Nobody tells you to use Discord. If you don't like using it, don't. Discord very clearly has a lot more features that make group chats with it more enjoyable than with Steam, but if you don't want to use Discord I doubt anybody will fault you for DMing them with Steam.
When did I say that the new chat is a bad thing? I started the post by saying that I'm glad that the chat is being updated.
This isn't about choosing sides. It's that companies are trying to fill the space Discord is currently filling and I'm personally saying that I'd rather use Discord because it is central. I don't want to have to check Reddit, Discord and Steam just to get what I currently get with Discord.
Yes, Discord cannot pay to keep itself open, which is why this is my proposal. Mutually beneficial - Steam get Discord's userbase & features, while Discord get money to monetise their product.
Discord aren't selling people's data. They're currently figuring out how to monetize Discord because, yes, Nitro isn't enough. And I never suggested it's anything to do with Valve, I'm simply stating that my idea is mutually beneficial for both Valve and Discord. I'm not suggesting that this is even likely to happen - I don't think either company plan to have anything to do with each other. It's but an idea.
Sorry but what you're saying is really just a personal nitpick and there is no point in discussing that. I'm pretty sure you already chatted with people both on Discord and on Steam anyways.
Well, everyone started leaving the group chat on Steam or they were completely ignoring what was going on in the group chat so I figured I had no other choices. It was multiple votes against mine for specific features Steam didn't have, including some lovely bugs where group chats are ghosted. And again the lovely connection.
You really aren't understanding my point, are you? Stop assuming that I hate Steam or some ♥♥♥♥, because I haven't said that. The point of my post is that I don't want other companies to have their own version of Discord within their application, and as a result I suggest that Discord and Valve should work together. I never said that I don't like the Steam chat.
