i mean you could say they ripped of the streaming part as well...
They try to build a all-in-one environment.
The future will show if it works or not
Let's see. Up until now, most people I've talked to have had to rely on discord or curse/twitch client. Why is that? I'd have to say its because steam's chat client has been super outdated since maybe a couple years after its inception. And it never updated, save some basic support for stuff that's AKIN to emjois.
So its either "get with the times" or "be outdated". If the people want something that discord offers, its up to others to imitate and expand upon that. That's how software works.
You don't think Discord is some unique snowflake do you? Hell no. Discord is a blatant rip off of Slack, which existed plenty before Discord was ever thought up. Discord added voip to the mix for the first time, which was a leg up over Slack. Other than that, Discord was a carbon copy of Slack, except marketed toward gamers.
Twitch gaming client (formerly curse) adapted their chat model to act more like discord as well. I don't see you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about those discrepencies. Or did you not think that far ahead.
But wait, there's more. Slack was just a modernized copy of mIRC.
Everything is a copy of a copy of a copy, with little bits of unique additions sprinkled in here or there.
Who the hell cares? Are you serious?
Aaaand like wtf do you expect from a chat?? theres is not much they can do its like calling someone that makes another TV a rip off, you want it to fly or what?
Steam = Connects only steam
So before i can't connect XBox Live, PS4, Switch, Youtube, Reddit, Twitch, Twitter, Skype, Battle.net, League,... to Steam that all-in-one environment is far far far away.
I mean c'mon steam doesn't even connect to youtube correctly, it only works halfway with games you own on steam else it's crippled. And the worst, steam is unable to handle FIDO U2F protected Google Accounts which also includes Youtube, i always need to generate a backup code for old incompatible devices to even get the video list, hilarious.
Also strangely discord itself also doesn't support FIDO U2F yet, but don't have any problems connecting to the accounts protected with (youtube, twitter,..), they simply open a browser for that which then handles FIDO U2F correctly or use OpenID and then connects the account.
I definitely expect much more from an 'all-in-one environment' than a proprietary chat.
old steam was best! -end of discussion.
