really weird odd steam profile picture glitch, bug, or ?
so i was going to change my profile picture to a all black photograph.

i googled black or color black or something and i saved this file right?

let me see here....

the file itself is named index and it is a .png file. it was a all black picture on the site i saved it from. i open it in paint and it is nothing but a simple like 200x200 all black photo.

this is how it originated from whatever website i downloaded it from.

anyhow. getting to the point here,

i uploaded it to my steam profile and instead of the all black picture it shows a close up of a bust of a women and across her shirt it says "send nudes"

ive never encountered this before.

is this some type of new photo encryption or something?

its really odd because in some places on steam it actually looks as if it is the all black photograph i wanted, on my desktop and in windows it even shows it as if it is a all black photograph, but i had no idea it really is this other picture that says send nudes until i uploaded it on here.

is this some type of error or glitch on steam?

anyone have any ideas?

Most websites convert uploaded content to their own preset jpg (most of the time with heavily compression enabled to save bandwith, which is why certain colors like red often look terrible afterwards).

It's ill advised in the first place, to take random images off the internet. You can easily create a simple black frame by yourself. You can use MS Paint or really a wide range of free programs for that. All in under one minute.

What happened has to do with the png file format and that with png you can use an alpha channel for transparency, which would enable someone to hide additional "content" in such an image. When uploading to steam the image is converted from png to jpg.

JPG/JPEG does not support an alpha channel/ transparency. So somewhere in that conversion the "hidden" content ends up being displayed. It's no mystery at all and Steam/ Valve is not trolling you or anyone else. The original "content" creator is. Which is why it's ill advised to take random stuff off the internet.

Either Steam's conversion to jpg combines the channels in the png image and the former "hidden" one ends up being displayed or the conversion disregards one channel due to file size and takes the bigger one or something like that. Valve should be able to fix this troll potential easily. But it's something with abuse potential you don't necessarily think about.

Now you got lucky there really, all kinds of stuff could have been hidden in there (one would hope search sites/ engines can screen/ filter these out but who knows) and you should not randomly try out more random images off of the internet as you run the risk of inadvertently spreading illegal content which at the very least could get your Steam account closed/ banned. And that's just the harm it could do to your gaming hobby but outside of that could get you in serious trouble.

Eg. imagine some really abhorrent illegal content would have been hidden in there and you were the one who uploaded/ had a part in distributing it. Which would have made you liable and Steam/ Valve an enabler/ accomplice and I imagine especially in america this could get someone in hot water pretty easily. Which is why I expect it's going to get "fixed" soon.

you apparently did not read or look at this for what it is. i even outlined a tutorial on how to make a call black image from scratch that will yield the result of you ending up with this glitched profile picture that says send nudes.

but yes, we are all well aware it is possible to encrypt hidden data, or hidden images inside an image. but that IS NOT what this is.

as i said, you can create a all black image a specific way from scratch in MS paint and it will end up giving you the odd profile picture we are discussing.

- so, get out of here with that nonsense of it is some random hidden embedded image someone else made we have already all unanimously found that IS NOT the case.

Thx for the condescending tone in your posts.

:winter2019happybulb: If the so called image glitch would happen with self-created images, in that case the above would not apply and you could give it a try (with self-created images/ files only) and be safe. What you should not try is blindly using random images off the internet, for the above stated reasons (which the OP should make clear for the less tech savvy).

If what OP states is true (I have not tested it) the only thing I can think of is it might be a remnant of some joke from a developer or something like that, possibly long forgotten (developer and/ or joke).

still didn't get that question
I uploaded a plain black 24-bit .bmp and saw the same.

Google Images can only find one visually similar image,

I've had the same glitch
Use mine. All you have to do is right click on my avatar in a browser and click on "save image as" (Chrome). Welcome to the darkness friends , this is a place where all hope dies. Have fun , enjoy your stay.

I'm joking btw with the darkness bit. Just saying it to be funny nothing more to it than that.

Same here figured out when I made my own pure transparent png image on photoshop and it would show a girl (no face shown) in a a tan shirt that says "send nudes". I found this out in the time when there was a windows update that heavily messed with steam and wouldn't let anyone use steam or start games
I was just able to replicate the glitch, but a different image popped up. I took an existing image, and put a black layer over it, but when I uploaded the .png to Steam, an odd image came up. It has outlines of 6 heads (3 black, 3 white) and some text which says 'rusqooo' (or 'nusqooo', the text is hard to understand).

Here's a link to the screenshot: https://sta.sh/01eyue8est0v

I'm not sure what's going on, but my discovery seems to show it's a technical glitch, not an Easter egg or a joke.

So I tried it again, adding a black layer to a screenshot, and adding one to an image downloaded from a website. Both times it just uploaded a black square. It doesn't seem to affect anything you make yourself, so long as you use a screenshot as a base image. Some images from some sites aren't affected either.

Edit: I tested it again, getting the same image (the 6 heads) I got before by using an image obtained from the same site as the image I used initially. So, it is definitely a technical error.

It is not a technical error. It is something to prevent people from having a transparent or full-colour pfp. It is not only black pfp, it is transparent as well. It is not a bug. you're welcome!
ok so I have something kind of similar??? I woke up today and looked at my steam and one of my friends had their pfp as some kind of ahegao face I looked at the profile and when I clicked it his pfp was the one he had it set as previously....weird
it does'nt work anymore
