"Oops, looks like your browser was told to deny us microphone access!"

I got this error when I tried to use voice chat today. ... I am not using the chat in a browser, I am using the regular steam chat window. Why am I getting this error?

EDIT: An old post said that it had to do with Windows 10 Privacy settings, but altering these settings did not help (they didn't have a specific entry for Steam).
EDIT2: Closing and restarting the voice chat seemed to have solved it. Leaving this here for posterity, I guess, because that error message really wasn't intuitive at all. I would never have even known that windows 10 had this problem had I not found the old post mentioning it.

Sorry, I already told you all I knew D:. Go into your Settings, and under microphone, tell it to allow apps to use it.

The steam client is just mostly a web browser

I'm getting this error on a Win7 Home Premium system. When I check my Hardware and Sound, it says my mic isn't plugged in, though it is. I've tested the mic on another system, so I know the hardware is sound, and the mic was working last night. The only browser change I made was to add the Pastebin extension to Chrome. Removing that doesn't seem to have changed anything. Ideas?

In windows, search for Settings. Privacy > (App Permission) Microphone and enable the allow apps to access your microphone button. :) For others who might google into this post.

Steam doesnt show up in the section so it still says "Oops, looks like your browser was told to deny us microphone access!"

I fix my problem just go to setting and click the web browser and I click delete web browser cache also delete web browser cookies, not suer this the way to fix but I also unchecked allowed desktop web browsers to automatically log into the steam site

In Your Microphone Privacy settings- under APPS.. - you should see "XBOX GAME BAR" and "XBox Console Companion"
- make sure both of those are turned "on" for MIC access - no need to restart your game- it should work instantly .
