No permission to message non-friends
Lately, Steam has been giving me an "Your account does not have permission to send messages to non-friends" popup every time I try to message someone not on my friends list.
I was able to do that before. It is a feature I use in CS:GO (right-click on anyone on the scoreboard or in "recent teammates" and click Send Message).

Upon messaging Steam Support I've been told to write about it here, suggesting that they're not aware of any limitations on my account that would prompt that.

Here's a Reddit thread about it as well:

This was possibly changed to reduce the spam that other users have experienced.

I'm unaware if this is an intended update.

Is this the same for other games that use this feature or is it limited to CS:GO for you?

Unfortunately, I don't think I have any games that have similar functionality, with similar functionality being the ability to open a dialog window with someone who isn't on my friends list. Outside of games, the Steam app itself refuses to do so, which has always been the case.

I understand that this change might be intentional and that would be a shame, because the ability to message people who you're not friends with definitely has its legitimate uses in CS:GO.

Don't understand why this hasn't gotten more attention. I've often sent messages to non-friends after a cs-go game inviting them to play - half the time it's because of that message they end up playing another with me or my friends.

Most people are courteous, respectful and friendly and I've never had an issue with this.

I'm going to assume this was a new feature added because 12 year olds were clicking links sent to them by strangers and losing their accounts.

But I'm just baffeled why more people haven't spoken up about this or it hasn't been mentioned anywhere in the updates. If you're going to add a major update like this, why not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tell people about it so they're not left completely in the dark? Embarassing

If you do not see something, it does not mean that it does not exist. Ask global moderators and Steam support.
I assume that you're both a global moderator and a Steam support agent to be making such statements.
Your argument was that nothing good came of this feature, which is clearly wrong, as attested by at least two of the four people who commented on this thread.

That's not a solid argument.

Neither was his.

Like I originally said, I'll just assume it was 12 year old getting their account stolen. If you can't handle an insult or two in your messages than I have no idea how you play CS:GO - and if you're clicking on links from strangers you're an idiot. There's a reason why the block button exists.

And clearly some people will argue anything just to argue. Nobody said it didn't happen.

All users like myself want is when something changes, an acknoledgement that things have changed and a reason why. Is that really too much to ask?

This has happened to me actually I've recieved a few messages from people not on my friends list asking me to login into some scam sites or whatever. I'm glad this feature is removed.

This is the reason Steam Guard is a thing. Your login credentials are safe as long as you don't provide the Steam Guard code. Or even if you do - they're still safe as long as the attacker is collecting them passively (because the code is only valid for 1-5 minutes). Even then, you're still mostly safe as any item trades must be confirmed by you on your phone and the account itself can be recovered as long as you know at least one game key you activated on your account.
And anyone who didn't bother with Steam Guard might have as well given up his items voluntarily.
Basically, stop blaming scams on a feature and start acknowledging the fact that SCAMMERS are to blame for SCAMS. Simple logic, isn't it?

I think everyone is sort of missing the point:

Steam didn't care to inform users of the change let alone the reason for the change. That is what is truely unfortunate about this: When you leave users in the dark when a simple explanation and a couple sentences will do the trick.

Pumpkins are nice and all, yay halloween, how about spending a minute or two to tell the millions of users why you suddenly removed a feature (whatever you want to call it) players like myself and others greatly appreciated? Then we wouldn't have silly threads like these (and many others) where people simply don't have a clue what happened or why.

On second thought, ♥♥♥♥ those stupid pumpkins, seriously.

its not a cs:go issue i am having the same thing with paladins only i invite a friend and he accepts not we cant talk because no permissions obviously its a bug not an intended feature so stop adding to the problem with bs excuses. if you don't have a fix don't post. (unless you have the same problem and want to bump)
Melody Nov 10, 2018 @ 1:01am
Maybe they're implementing something in order to disallow potentially fake accounts to chat with non-friends, so you're getting the "you don't have permission" error because it's not yet fully implemented.

My theory is that they're implementing something so that accounts that don't satisfy specific requirements won't be able to send messages to non-friends.

If not, we'll get a confirmation that they're removing that for real if they remove the actual button from CS:GO in the next update.

PS: Ignore useless answers from people who are not getting the point of your post, otherwise you'll feed an endless and useless battle that will likely lead to some moderators locking your post. A honest person who can't get the point of your post will ask for clarification instead of behaving like an elithist.
