With one of my friend it was so awfull i was feeling like i was at the top of a mountain and the echoes was resonning like forever, it was so awful the functionnality felt limited, but later this morn it was less worst with another friend, and the other one said it was probably because of his tv speaker he was using while we were talking, he tried some stuff and finally come up with a good balance of volume and echoes.
Above of all, voice features is working, but will need some upgrade at certain point, imo.
Thanks for the feedback though, this is something that may continue to improve in the future.
Lot of people are complaining Valve doesnt care about their customer anymore, but I have a deep trust about you and i know you are making an honest...and such an hard work out there. This answer you given had proven Valve is still working thoroughly with their customer for the better.
Its unfortunatly common among individual to see an half-glass of water empty than half-full....which mean they see which part of your work isnt done yet rather than what you already did.
Today, mic was really better.Lot of my friend are really poor and cant afford a dedicated mic and we still have some trouble with echoes, but it already seems lot better.
I am grateful you took the time to answer...it's proving to the people who have mistrusted you're corp for their own reason that Valve moderator and customer relationship is still active out there to answer every politely asked question and matter regarding to them.
Wish you had a good day at your wheeled office, JM!
tee-hee :3
this issue is very annoying. we (my daughter and I) have been using the steam chat during game play for months and it wasn't until the overhaul that we can't even tolerate using it. we are going to try Dicord or something, which really makes me upset, as the Steam chat is much easier to use. I can't talk to her when my voice is echoing back to me word for word. not to mention, i can HEAR her game and what she's doing through our headsets. its rediculous. and this only happens from my end. she's not hearing my game sounds or her words echoing back to her.
This should really be better, not worse, in the new chat. You might have her try lowering her input volume/gain, and perhaps raising the transmission threshold to High from it's default of Medium. The issue is when the game volume / your voice through her speakers is picked up by the mic louder than the transmission threshold. Setting input volume/gain too high will contribute as well. You may have to play with those settings a little, but you actually have more tools to avoid this than you ever had in the old voice chat so it should be possible to achieve better or at least equivalent results.

you are not reading my post correctly. we are NOT using our speakers, we both are on headsets, she lives in Oregon and I'm in Washington, we both have the Logitech G430 headsets. there is abosolutely no reason why i should be able to hear her game and my words echoing back from a headset.
Sorry, I must have missed that, but the same advice applies. With the headset, the volume must be loud out of the headphones such that the microphone can pick it up. However, it should be easier to correct as it's unlikely it would be way too loud and you probably just need to lower input gain or adjust your Windows microphone specific settings like boost/level in your control panel.
The way this all works is really the same as before, except there is more echo cancellation support, and better controls for you to adjust levels and thresholds. The only way you will hear your voice echo back is if it's playing back loudly on her end such that the mic picks it up, and the mic gain is high enough that it's triggering the transmission threshold just from that noise. As long as her voice when speaking is closer/louder to the mic than the playback of your voice she should be able to adjust input gain and threshold to correct the issue.
Find the Steam settings from the Gear icon in the top right of the friends list.
For the windows settings, search for sounds in the control panel and try to find the manage audio devices section. There should be a tab for Playback and a tab for Recording, find the mic under recording, right click properties, there will be a levels tab and within that there may be options like boost or level (it's hardware/driver dependent what options appear).
jmcaskey, my mic settings do not have a levels tab, maybe not in Win7? i will check when i have the headset plugged in again. i'm currently using my speakers, no mic on.
