Chat won't open (Solved)

I try to open a message window with ANYONE and it opens for half a second and then crashes, very annoying since now i can only message people off the phone app

So basically, once the issue happens, you have to restart steam to fix it. - Credit to Milanos :)

To prevent the issue, open the chat manually by searching the persons name. - Credit to tris

IMPORTANT: This thread is literally 5 years old at the time of this update and yet people are beginning to comment on it complaining the help here isn't helping. Of course it isn't because of how long it has been. I highly recommend anyone with a similar issue to make your own threads or find more recent threads instead of focusing on this one. I would close and lock the thread if I could but I don't seem to have that option.

That's a good short term solution, but it would be preferable if Valve patched it.

I discovered what causes it. Opening the "unread messages" button from the friend window

In what context? Like if someone msgs you? Or like unread msgs from a forum like this?

If someone messages you, you get a little notifications in your friends menu saying that you have an unread message. I have found that opening this in the Steam client, but not the web browser, causes the bug we seem to be experiencing here.
