[BUG] Non steam game icons.
This post is for steam labs and a bug report.

When you add a non steam game and go to properties, select a different icon to show up in the text part of the library (next to the name) it actually always makes the game icons blank no matter what you pick! You can create a desktop shortcut and the icon will show but inside of our library it just wont show anything.

EDIT: ~10:45pm est on Nov 1st an update was pushed out. I do subscribe to the beta build (if they are still offered, not sure but I was). As of this time the update did not address or fix the issue. The behavior was the same in beta I just never reported it.

Hope you can fix the problem ad push out a small hotfix in a couple of days.

it's the same thing for some third party mods, i have no idea what causes it on those however. i tried looking into the gameinfo for sourcemods, and nothing seems to be different (other than the layout) and for goldsrc mods, all of them are blank (for me anyway). typical valve, releasing an ui that still kinda is in "beta"

Thanks for the report. This will work if you set the icon from a .png or .tga file but clearly isn't working if you try to set the icon from a .exe, which I think it what you're trying to do here. We'll get a fix into a future build.

I set it from a different exe. Its blank. Done it for many non steam games and they all turn blank. The icon for the orignal exe you link shows but if you select something else it becomes blank. Even if you put it back to the original icon. No idea why.

I'm trying to set the icon for a non-steam game (a .sh script that runs Firefox in game mode, see here https://github.com/cheater/firefox-steam-deck-game-mode ). All other artwork works, but the icon remains blank in the steam desktop client on the deck. All other artwork can be set. If I create a desktop icon, the icon shows up in the desktop shortcut. The desktop shortcut properly refers to the icon (/home/deck/Firefox_logo,_2019.png). I tried re-exporting the downloaded image with gimp, making the image square, scaling the image down to 64x64, and exporting as tga, but the icon in the desktop client remains blank.

:jangry:

But if I set it and then reboot, sometimes (not always) it'll show up at the next boot. Sometimes I reboot to update the OS, so maybe whatever cache invalidation that does is happening that isn't happening initially when the icon is set the first time around. EG while writing this I set the icon to png, then rebooted back into game mode, and from that I went to check my OS update channel and an an update to the latest version and after boot up the icon was there.

:Dandelion:

Could y'all look into this? I'm on the latest beta channel :happystar2022:

i'm on OS 3.6.20 but before the update mentioned above I was on 3.6.19.

ps feel free to use a script like this to add firefox to steam os game mode ... it's really good and much, much better than chrome...
Adding an Executable as a Non Steam game results in blank Icons.

When an Exe file is added, at first it shows the icon for that EXE file.
When Steam is restarted, the icon becomes blank.
Repeating the process of adding Exe file, and then dragging the Non Steam item into a Collection, the Icon becomes blank.

Restarting Steam does not fix this issue. Sometimes the EXE icon will randomly appear, but will disappear again leaving a blank placeholder.
In Settings > Library > "Show game icons in the left Column" toggle On/Off does not fix this issue either.

Windows 10, All redists, DotNet, everything is updated. No other issues related to Thumbnails or Icons on the system.

Issue is not fixed as of March 2025.

Edit : Issue started during Families Beta, and is still an issue after Beta has been finalized into main branch.

I cannot find a fix for this:
Added Battle.net-installer as Non-Steam Game(force Proton 9). Installed Starcraft 2. Set Battle.net-installer icon as Starcraft 2.png 256x256 icon from protonshortcuts/icons/256/apps/. When I set it, nothing happens, the icon stays blank.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
