Steam Library feels Sluggish
Is it just me or does the new steam beta for the new "library" feel a bit Laggy? It seems slightly slow to scrolling. As well as going in and out of selecting a game. Not sure why this is happening so I figured I'd ask this.

Seems the most it takes up so far is around 200mbs for me. Yet even with 16gs of ram. The hover function even lags. Dragging your mouse up and down the list of games on the left, you can watch as the hover function tries to catch up to your mouse. Damn this is bad.

You can turn on Low Performance Mode for the library. Top Left> Steam> Settings> Library> Low Performance. It removes certain enhanced graphics and transitions.

Fairly sluggish here as well (Linux user). Seems valve assumes we all have gigabit internet and fast NMVE PCIe SSD drives.

It is slowly getting better. No doubt I'll soon have to remove all other data off this drive just to make room for all the fluff I can't seem to see how to turn off.

Edit: forgot to mention "Low Bandwidth Mode" in Library Settings. This limits the community junk a bit.

Thanks, as for the low performance mode. That got rid of most of the issues. But if you do alot of scrolling, you notice it chug along at its slow pace sorta. But the hover function is quick. No lag. I'll try the limited bandwidth as well.

Valve takes stats of their users' systems and compiles a list most likely and targets their platform for the higher tiered list, whether that be mid tier systems or high end. The systems collected might also be showing if a hard-drive or Solid State drive is used and what percentage. Valve doesn't really target their platform to work smoothly on like a 2014 laptop.

The problem from what I see is the placeholder images valve is using for game banners that have not moved over to their system. The placeholder images are up to 10x bigger in file size than the approved longer images. Most approved images are about 59kb while steams place holders are as big as 800kb but most falling in the range of 500ish. That's the biggest difference. The previous client never had banner images this big. It's really sucking up memory

As said in the locked thread

I was thinking the imagery they're using right now isn't optimized for the current display sizes. When I was developing websites, size matters a bucket ton between a few seconds and what feels like an eternity when it comes to loading a website.
When I noticed the hover function on the list of games lag behind the mouse as I pulled the mouse down across the list, I knew something was up for a hover is like the simplest thing ever and for that to lag, something is hogging memory and from what I can hazard a guess. They've introduced far more imagery, and did a tile display. Those would have to be the source of the lag to be frank because each image has to be pulled from steam to your PC and if the images are much larger then what they're displayed at, then you'd run into this sort of sluggish response. Especially if you have easily over 100 plus games in your library.

You can turn on low performance mode but I haven't tested how much it saves in system resources. Steam> Settings> Library

It makes a difference, at least for me. Honestly they could simplify the library more. Rather than have fancy transitions for the tiles, just have them "bloom" in size by like 1.5% to give the user tactile feedback when they're looking through their library. But they don't need a shadow or a glow.

I noticed on games when you hover over them they pop-up in a way and have a line to the right of them for a second

Looking at it more. They do seem to just "tilt up" as well as have what I'd guess is a white diagonal shine that has its alpha turned to transparency that slides down the image slightly when you hover over it.

I'm not sure how I feel about the extra little window that pops up when you hover on a game that displays your playtime as well as images of the game. I'd like to see it where if you hover over the title of the game. The cover image dims, and the info is displayed on it rather than it appearing separate.

It seems to me they took elements from the store page. That little window that shows pictures of games.
Grimsdottir Sep 22, 2019 @ 4:37pm
Thats my guess as well as to why they didn't do the tile transition that I suggested because it would just be easier probably to do a preview window with info from the storefront.

Same here. Disabling GPU acceleration for rendering web views gets rid of the lines
