I've been making updated grid images for my non steam games all morning. Base resolution is 224x333. Any size png or jpg will work as long as it's constrained to those proportions when resizing your template in Photoshop or GIMP. You just wouldn't want to go smaller than that because Steam would end up enlarging them which would reduce the image quality.
I suck at image editing, and I'm probably not the only one.
I think i'll just wait for a page like Steam Banners to surge, and use the ones published in there.
The publishing of game covers is a responsibility of the individual game devs and there is little Valve can do. My recommendation is just to wait a bit until everyone has caught on. Alternatively you can always try to make your own covers.
Well, maybe. But it's still very annoying, and there's no guarantee that we will get a new cover for every game ever made.
That's true. But that problem will always exist for every major change. In case a dev does not follow through and the game is popular enough chances are someone is going to make an unofficial cover for it. Other than that its just a game of luck.
While I don't know your library I do not have such a big problem with horizontal covers. Most of my games already have vertical versions and those that don't are games that will most likely not get any (like the now delisted Ducktales for instance).
There you have it. There are certain games wich aren't very likely to get updated covers, and we wouldn't have had this problem if there was an option to go back to horizontal covers.
And yes, I do have a lot of games without updated covers. The popular indies and AAA games will probably get it in the near future, but some games that aren't as popular may just stick with the og covers. Like Kero Blaster or Galaxy of Pen & Paper.
There are already places to get images...
For one you can use Google...
also there are these sites..
https://www.reddit.com/r/steamgrid/new/
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mTI6VqvHKwWfyg3hUdhCg1nM0NhlXzLX

The default image size used by Valve seems to be 300x450 (600x900) This is the size that they Officially use (you can see them in \Steam\appcache\librarycache)
Custom images get stored in \Steam\userdata\XXXXXXXXX\config\grid.
They get renamed to AppID followed by the letter p.png (APPIDp.png) You can get the AppID from the games store page URL.

As you can see the file is named 600x900 but actual image size is 300x450
As it stands its to time consuming to do large libraries when you have to select games one at a time and navigate menus to set custom art.
The ability to drag and drop from my Desktop the the game in steam and have it apply it would be great.
Sidenote: You can delete the original files you downloaded as steam copies them to the clients install folder (\Steam\userdata\########\config\grid)
Here is one for Galaxy of Pen & Paper...

and Kero Blasters
https://imgur.com/a/rZRhigO (I had to resize it to 600x900).
Both found using google searching for:
"Name of game" Box art
"Name of game" cover art
"Name of game"
