Option to make custom images for the games
It would be nice to make a banner for my favorite game, a cover, and a logo, and make it available for the Non-steam games

\Steam\appcache\librarycache

It contains all the images used for the games page. You can create your own and replace it using the same name if you really wanted to.
Thanks for sharing this with us, it helps a lot, at least for the moment, I hope that this is a temporal solution, and not something we have to do always. Even though he found a solution, the Client should have a more comfortable shortcut for us who wants to do it.

It is VERY limited though...

Some games use artwork to display the title of the game on the banner image (APPID10_library_hero.png). If a game does not use an image (APPID_logo.png) for this you can not add one. If you add on it will not load it up and still defaults to the basic white game title text.

But you can change the title art (APPID_logo.png) on games that do use it :)

Counter-Strike with the Team Fortress logo on it.

Now if only we could add banners and stuff to Non-Steam Games

I did find out that you can set custom cover art. However the ability to customize banners is still missing. As for the dimensions it seems to be 600x900 but when you set a custom image steam seems to resize them automatically (at least for me) so just make sure it uses the same aspect ratio.

The file names steam uses say 600x900 but the actual files are 300x450. And as you said steam "resizes" them to fit but sometime stuff gets cut off. So yeah it is best to try to be as close to aspect ratio as possible.

yea not me. they just need to allow you to select using the old grids if you choose, period. Ive spent years, literally creating artwork collections for thousands of games.

all worthless now unless im in BPM.

Absolutely insane that valve would think this is acceptable. So im supposed to spend years recreating thousands of items in a different AR now?

Jesus.

I have checked and the official documentation states:
Please provide at '300px x 450px' or ‘600px x 900px’ (the higher res versions will be required in the future).

According to the filenames some official images seem to be in 600x900 and steam just downscales them. So really either is fine.

This is so nice now. You can just search for normal Game DVD cover images online and add them as you like ... even for third party games added to steam :steamhappy:

It would be fantastic if there'd be a community feature for that. So like a workshop for the covers and logos, it would be a good counter for the games which have just their banner as a ugly cover.

yea, i mean apart from the thousands, if not tens of thousands of grids you created, searched out, downloaded, added over the last DECADE.

and apart from the games that come in packaging with a different aspect ratio anyhow.

its a fail on the grand scale. The rational"ist" in me says they'll fix it though. Just like in the non-beta you can select detailed/list/grid view. I imagine they'll let you choose what type of art you want to display.

they darn well better. That or push some of the newer features (like mass category management) to the legacy UI and leave the option for people to stay with an improved version of that (which they should have done to begin with).

meh

of course artwork aside, I cant even load the new UI cause it takes my dozens of categories and chokes on itself trying to add them all to "uncategorized" it wont migrate them properly from stable.

Add in the fact I hear people saying that non steam games wont stream and yea... im opting out of beta for the first time in years. Half by choice, and Half cause I have no choice considering the above.

Though i see a beta update was pushed today. Addressed 0 of the aforementioned, so theres that :P

you musta been around a minute. Im old, but I did 99% of my gaming via mmorpgs since I was a kid - so had 0 use for steam up until relatively recently. Once steam links and streaming became a thing - I was on it, and of course remorseful I hadnt been sooner.

during a VERY quick google, I believe some article mentioned its current incarnation was 16 years or something? Perhaps that was when steam became a thing though. I wouldnt know.

either way yea, I hope they work on it for a good long while and fix a ton, and add a ton before making it mandatory.

I mean keep legacy UI available and add a few features (like not locked to 1080p and the ability to have more control over categories and their contents) and i'd be happy with it forever.
