Mute dialogue in Half-Life 2: Episode 2

UPDATE: An official patch is in the works.

Like the title says, almost all of the dialogue in this game is mute. Only the dialogue that's shared with other HL2 games can be heard (or so it seems to be).
This issue was present during the last client beta period, but hasn't been fixed by the time the beta changes were implemented to the release build. I brought this up to a Valve employee directly back then, so i didn't think i would need to post about it here. Maybe i should have :P

EP2 SteamPipe testing files/settings that have sneaked into the public beta by accident?

Here are errors console shows when the first three lines of the game, spoken by Alyx, are supposed to play:

Failed to load sound "*vo\outland_01\intro\al_rbed_callinggordon04.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository
Failed to load sound "*vo\outland_01\intro\al_rbed_yourokay.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository
Failed to load sound "*vo\outland_01\intro\al_rbed_holdonsec_alt.wav", file probably missing from disk/repository

EDIT: I opened episode two content.gcf and found that the vo folder inside the sound folder has only 7 .wav files in total. Someone has made the Steam client delete almost all the files in that folder D:

EDIT: half life 2 episode 2 english.gcf has these sound files. But this .gcf doesn't have any other folders under sounds than the vo folder. So the game is looking for the dialogue files from a .gcf file which doesn't have them.

I have the same problem too :( I loaded HL2EP2 and got this surprise. Portal 2 works fine for me.

Ditto. I've already tried restarting just about everything, disabling beta, and verifying the game cache. All that's left is to reinstall the game, which I don't really want to do. I've put in a ticket with Steam a while ago, but I haven't heard back yet. Anyone figure out a solution?

A Valve employee i've been talking with told me that they are aware of the issue. Hope they'll fix it soon.

ways:
1.download "GCFScape.zip" (link: http://game.ali213.net/thread-1694095-1-3.html) and extract it.
2.use GCFScape.exe to open "half-life 2 episode two english.gcf" (in X:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps) and extract the "sound' folder.
3.put this folder to X:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\(your ac name)\half-life 2 episode two\ep2
4.run the game and then the problem is solve

@Duo hey thanks for putting that up there. Works great. and no, there are not instructions for the first option, but if you put the sounds folder into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\(your username)\half-life 2 episode two\ep2 you should be fine. However, 7zip gave me an error when i was extracting the sounds folder. it said: "CRC failed in 'sound/ambient/levels/outland/OL06BridgeBreak_PT02.wav'. file is broken". I assume this won't be a problem but i just want to know if anyone has the same problem.

One other option is to opt into SteamPipe beta.
Right click EP2 in your Library -> Properties -> Betas

I tried J.P.'s comment about opting into SteamPipe Beta, as this seemed the easiest (and in my mind the most unlikely to work) . BUT IT DID WORK> Alyx Vance now has her voice.

The rest is just my trials and further blather.

When this "mute" problem happened on 2 of my pc's I realized it was not my doing. I just got lucky with enough googling and found this thread.

The response from my steam ticket was boilerplate and did not fix the problem, I have pasted it here.

"Please try the following:

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\)

Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps"

Re-launch Steam and re-install the game.

Once the installation is complete, test the issue.

If this resolves the issue, you may copy the new files into the "old_steamapps" folder and rename it to "steamapps" to restore your other games without re-downloading.

If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other gamec..."

I am going to add this threads link to my steam ticket and maybe it might trickle along the intarweb and help a few other distraught gamers.

Yeah i did that and it worked, i didn't know what he meant at first, i tried going into my Steamapps and clicking properties. i didn't know he meant in STEAM LIBRARY click properties. lol but yes now i have Diologue. i hope they make a patch so this doesn't happen to anyone else. And pray for Episode Three

Kinda, but the problem surfaced during a client beta.

Opt into SteamPipe. Right click EP2 in your Steam Library, Preferences -> Betas
Might as well do it now, since the conversion is going to become mandatory in the future anyway.
