Steam Deck kind of weak
Like it's better than the Switch, Xbox One, and PS4. But the CPU is weaker than what's in Xbox Series S and the GPU can't even march the PS4 Pro's. I mean my gaming laptop isn't anything special either but at least its not as weak as the Deck and I knew what I was getting into buying this. Good on Valve for having 256GB and 512GB as storage options though. I still don't see how you can play the newest games on the Deck without lag unless the screen is in 720 HD or 900 HD+ lol

Well looking at the prices, it's definitely never gonna compete against the Switch since it's expensive. And for the same price of the 512GB model, I can buy a budget gaming laptop with Ryzen 5 5600H and RTX 3050-Ti which would destroy even the Xbox Series S. Or build a budget desktop PC that can also destroy the Xbox Series S (once scalping ends ofc). Sorry Valve but you already lost against Nintendo before even releasing the Deck.

The Nvidia handheld Android devices also use very weak hardware, which may have been impressive at the time, stopped being so years later. Sad to see Nintendo decided to use the Tegra X1 in their Switch, and it shows since not only are third party ports looking and running terribly (e.g., Mortal Kombat 11, Witcher 3, Fortnite, etc).

But also some of their own exclusive games can't even achieve a minimum of 720p @ 30fps in docked mode (e.g., Hyrule Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles). I've read people complaining some games are running at like 576i @ 20fps and the visuals still look ugly. If Nintendo had used a more modern Nvidia chip, like say the MX 150, then the Switch would've been hell of a lot better and be able to properly compete with Xbox One and PS4 in terms of hardware.

The CPU and the storage speed/expansion already beats the PS4 and Xbox One, so if they had a MX 150 or faster, then more third party support would've come to the Switch. And of course many games that would've looked and ran bad now wouldn't have if Nintendo avoided using the crappy Tegra X1. Nintendo had a second chance to redeem themselves with the newer Switch but they blew that opportunity too. Steam Deck is what a Switch Pro/Ultimate/Deluxe would've been if they cared.

You're forgetting that not every game is available on cloud services, especially since Devs want a piece of the cake metaphorically speaking. Some games that are provided on the cloud get taken down and then people will have to buy them to play offline. Also, even in first world countries, there are still people that don't even have an internet speed of 10mbps down and up. Until game companies embrace cloud gaming more and "faster" internet is more common, it's not gonna take off as you hope.

I only learned about Nvidia Shield devices because of the hype for Steam Machines at CES 2014 - when Unreal Engine 4 bringing full pc graphic feature set to android, Tegra K1 soc and Shield Tablet were announced by Nvidia.

More Shield devices have sold than Steam Machines - apparently 550, 000 Steam Machines shipped and vast majority of those gamers who bought them wiped SteamOS and installed windows as soon as they got them.

Nvidias cloud gaming service was only availabkle on Shield devices until about two years ago but now supports windows, linux, macos, ios, android, android tv and chromebook adding more than a billion possible new subscribers to cloud gaming.

At GTC 2021 it was confirmed there are now more than ten million GeForce Now users globally.

My point being is cloud gaming has evolved and been more widely adiopted than Steam Machines and seven years ago i had much more faith in Steam Machines than any cloud gaming service/industry for being sdopted by gamers.

Seven years ago i used to think like you but have spent time and effort in educating myself and primarily see Steam Deck as an awesome streaming client for cloud gaming services with added bonus it can run games locally and offline too.

Here is a video of a Steam game running on the OG Shield TV Pro (2015) model using cloud gaming service.

Here is a video of same game running natively on Steam Deck

One thing for sure is in the next seven years from now very few gamers will NOT be cloud gaming. imho.

Where will SteamOS be in seven years from now? is an interesting question too. ;-)

Where's the videos? And the last guy above me and myself have told you that only with a very strong and fast internet connection is cloud gaming going to become as mainstream as consoles and mobile gaming. I'm betting most people who have GeForce Now and similar services already own either consoles and/or PC.

The first video is incoming but dont have a Steam Deck yet

Yes, an internet connection is needed. You got that right.

Have you tried any cloud gaming services?

There are still a lot of people in North America with internet of only a few megabits per second in download speed and possibly hundreds of kilobits per second in upload speed. Even people that have at least 10mbps in down and up speeds are still gonna suffer from lag for cloud gaming. Those with internet speeds in the tens of megabits like myself are uncommon and those over 100mbps are rare. And ofc those with speeds exceeding 1 gigabit are legendary.

can we buy the cheapest of all, and add an M2 SSD ourself? that would be nice if possible. it would be sad if the other variants have M2 solded on the motherboard and not replacable.

Sadly I think everything is soldered and integrated to the motherboard. The other SSDs are apparently not soldered but are of a unique M2 type that isn't commonly sold.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
