Steam client hangs on shut down?
I have narrowed down my computer shut down hang up on either the steam client or a usb device. I believe it is the steam client though because if I shut down the client and then shut down the computer, it shuts down fine but if the client is running while trying to shut down it freezes on shut down. Anyone else have this issue?

Yes and that used to be as intended but MS has changed that for Windows. It used to be a failsave to get to save unsaved progress, besides being a failsave for apps not becoming corrupted when inapropriatly closed. I for one am glad Steam still can use the feature because of gamecrashes. Saves the time to reboot everything.

You should get a warning message though, asking you to continue, forceclosing Steam, or cancel shutdown. Do you get that warning?

No, it just says shutting down and completely freezes and have to do a hard shutdown.
That ofcouse is not as intended. What OS do you use exactly? Any mnore info youy can think of?

:correctamundo: Works fine for me
At least for Steam it does. That is to say, i did get the warning for both Client and for the Friends list.

My Desktop
Windows 10 Home (x64) Fall Creators ed., v 1709 build 16299.19

No more info really. I am running windows 10 Pro version 1703 (OS build 15063.674)
I have officially narrowed it down to Steam though. Stoping all other programs before shut down to get the freeze. I think it has to be a Windows issue not forcing Steam to shut down and makes it freeze.
Can't help but notice your Windows version 1703. Any particular reason not to update to 1709? You don't need to give details unless they might be of influence on this matter. I'm asking to know if you are sure for yourself, which is likely if indeed you live up to your nickname.

After looking after your post about what version you have. I went and checked for an update but Windows said it was up to date. On this computer, I was one of those people who got the fall creators update by accident before it actually launched. I am guessing it reverted and this is causing my issues. I appreciate your help. I will have to figure out if I can manually get it updated or have to do a clean install.

Must have been a very Steam-specific fix that was applied, or it took them a very cynically long time to fix it, or Steam just changed something badly.
Because I have this issue, too, and I am running Windows 7! When Steam is running and I attempt to shut down, the task bar flickers many times and it takes at least a whole minute before Steam finally gives up.

? This is a thread from 2017. And Windows 7 is not supported anymore by Microsoft.

That said, it's not healthy for a computer to be shut down when applications are still running. OP wrote (s)he closed Steam before shutting down. In Windows 10 there are few applications that still have their warning message. As i recall (nut sure about it), Steam is among the few who still should show the warning when closing down the computer.

Is there a way to tell Steam not to warn about an attempted shutdown?
I would find this silly anyway especially if no game is running. There is no risk of data loss. An app should not act as a blocker to system shutdown. It is getting the order by the OS to shut down cleanly but immediately, so it should do that.
I might have to set forced app termination in Windows, but I don't really want to set that for all possible cases. Only Steam is being difficult on my system.

Steam is not your average app. As software it's so much more then most applications, with many different features some of which could be entire apps in itself. Besides being hosts to the games, music and movies, and a wide variaty of other software, not to mention a large amount of data needed for Steam and all that Steam may host. Last but not least, there might be a page (forum, chat, artwork, store etc.) open where the post/add/send/save/OK/etc. button hasn't been hit, like many tyes of documents on a given computer also still should block shutting down to be sure if a user want's to save what's added or not.
