Sudden playing of random sounds?
I had Steam idling in the background and was talking to some people on TS when I heard a weird noise, like a tone from a game soundtrack. I though it was someone doing something on TS3 so checked the whisper list and nothing and the room was locked. I closed it and it continued, but a minute later I started hearing sound from a movie or something.

So I looked on the mixer to see where the sound was coming from and it was Steam. I checked for open voice chats on Steam (there were none), and closed anything else I had open (there were no browser windows). It was what sounded like the soundtrack from some early Jackie Chan film or something...

I checked the Resource Monitor for network activity related to Steam was stuff coming from and Stuff related to Steam.exe was:

cloud-2.steampowered.com @203kb/s
r1---sn-aigeznez.youtube.com @63kb/s
cdn.steamcommunity.com @46.5kb/s
rockpapershotgun.com @7b/s
cloud-3.steampowered.com @4.9
Media.pcgamer @4.3
Ihr14s2-in-f8.1e100.net twice at 342 and 25

There were no downloads started at the time, the Client was on the front store page (and minimized) and I had no community stuff open. I hadn't touched it for ages, and there was no open voice chats or anything similar. Changing pages around the store and changing tabs wouldn't stop the noise.

Exiting Steam made the sound stop, and when it restarted it was gone...

It was just weird. I'm not sure what steps cause it as it happened suddenly without any input from me, and as I did nothing obvious to make it start i'm not sure what would make it happen again. Maybe Steam is haunted! :D

I am actively experiencing this bug at the moment. It appeared as if a Steam window popped up with a list of sounds effects and started playing them, and then continued to do so even after the window was closed. It might be some magic hot key that triggered it? I took myself offline entirely, but the playing continues...

I am running package versions 1457636974, API v017, built March 10th 2016 @ 10:42:19

- Edit -
AH HA! Opening the Steam Music Player (under the View menu) showed it had a queue of sound effects from Life is Brutal which I was probably hovering over when some magic key was pressed. Pausing the player stopped the noises immediately, and then I cleared all the tracks from the queue to be safe.

im pretty sure its a probelm with the steam streaming
okay, i was just over in twitch in the browser, and accidentally typed with steam having the focus instead of the chat thing in the twitch tab. this suddenly started a list of like sound clips in a popup, and started playing them. the sounds i guess come from a game itself, and i exited that popup player thing, but they freaking keep cycling. i've spent the last twenty minutes trying to find a list of steam (grid mode, not big picture) keyboard shortcuts, but can't find anything no matter what i search on, only game-specific shortcuts.

i can confirm that what i am describing popped up a popup of sound files, and started playing them, and it was done by typing (i forget what the hell i typed) into the steam window in grid view mode.

HOW DO I MAKE THIS STOP? IT IS ANNOYING AS HELL! AND WHY CAN I NOT FIND A LIST OF KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS FOR THE STEAM CLIENT. THESE WERE NOT ALT OR CONTROL COMBOS. THIS WAS FROM INADVERTENTLY TYPING AN ENGLISH SENTENCE INTO THE STEAM CLIENT INSTEAD OF THE BROWSER.
Steam clearly has keyboard commands in grid mode that do not involve alt, ctrl, or a function key.

Where is the documentation on there?
I went into big picture mode, and it suddenly showed me what was playing, since they were quick clips, they kept cycling in a loop. i did type "@Soldier" which was a portion of a twitch handle for the person i was speaking with, and the clips all came from something that showed up as "Soldier" on all four of the looping clips.

how did this happen from grid mode? what are the music player commands while in grid (not big picture) mode?

Try clicking on the 'View' menu at the top, and then going down to the 'Music Player'.

When this happened to me, that was the internal Steam app that was actually rotating through all the clips. Opening that up, stopping the player, and clearing the playlist solved it for me.
im getting maffia 3 youtube ads i think
The same thing just happened to me and it sounded like some chinese guy was playing GTA V so I think it must be Steam playing random YouTube videos for some reason.
i was chatting with a friend and i could hear a middle eastern dude talking about a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that murdered him and a confessional to the police, totally thought my buddy was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with me till i closed discord....

Man, same happened with me and my friends.

On 11/19/18, my friends and I were playing CS:GO, when around 1:30 am, a very weird song started playing, but of the 6 who were on call, only 3 heard it, the song suddenly stopped after a few seconds. for luck 1 of my friends was doing live. We were very scared of that, because we didn't know the source of that audio. We went to my friend's live and recorded the moment when it happened. We spent the rest of the day trying to find out what had happened, but we didn't find anything.

Almost 2 years later, we had already forgotten what happened. when my friend, who was on live, discovered the song that played.
