Backup too slow
Backup system speed is 30 MB/s even on the fastest system. I can copy a file at 90MB/s to my external USB 3.0 hard drive but Steam backup does the same thing with only 30MB/s.

Also asks me to resize with CD or DVD. Who the hell is using those anyway?

Steam backup need an overhaul.

Well there are some people out there that still use DVD so having that option is fine, although once you get past 20GB its kinda pointless but I have to agree about the speed as I can backup my entire operating system to a disc image faster than backing up just 5 games on Steam, its REALLY slow. In fact I no longer even use the backup feature, i just drag the Steam folder to the USB drive as its quicker.

Well, looks like like I will completely swtich to the SSD technology and do the same you do :)

But the backup feature really needs an overhaul.

yea, also an option to disable the files compression. Atm best and fast way is to copy the game folder directly to the external hd (or something), close steam, go on other pc, open steam, install the game, pause it, exit steam, copy the game folder to the "downloading" folder in steam main folder/steammaps, open again steam and wait for the verification..

Doing some backups now and whether co-incidental or actually throttled the backup is running at a fixed 200Mbit/s
Source is SATA3 SSD, Target is a NAS capable of 2Gb/s write.
Would dearly love to be able to backup faster.

Here I am searching for an answer as to why backing up 500GB worth of games is going about 40Mbit/s. Seriously, the code to copy a file is trivial, they must have added extra code just to slow it down.

CPU is about 30%, hard disk is about 20% and network about 20%. So no bottlenecks I can see.

Been 5 years...

LOL it must be a joke for how EXTREMELY slow is it to backup and restore games. The whole routine should be rewritten from scratch. Maybe it was ok for 800MB max games many years ago but today is hilarious: I can manually zip/rar (yes, compressed) games 11 times faster on external USB 3.0 drive.

...Steam has NO backup feature.

2020, just backed up 3 games, still damn slow

Hi. I'm from the future to tell you how slow this thing still is. I've been waiting 3 hours for my games to back up so I can start taking my computer apart and build a new one. It got to 1 minute, then bounced back to another HOUR!!!! WTF!!! Fix this.

We have come now to the point where I can download games faster than I can back them up.

We have passed that point years ago.
