Can't click any buttons - Linux - menu buttons / html buttons don't work
ISSUE
On Linux, I'm having trouble clicking anything within the client that isn't a main button. I can install games, play games, click through the main tabs, but when I try and click on anything within a right-click menu (such as Properties), it doesn't let me click. I also cannot click any menu-list-items within the Settings page (can't opt into Steam Beta by clicking the menu entry for it).

OS
Linux Debian 11

STEPS / RESULTS

Right click any game within the game list
>Try to click Properties
--doesn't work. nothing happens
>Try and click cogwheel to access settings / properties for the game
--doesn't work. nothing happens
>Try to click -any- contextual menu button within -any- section of Steam
--doesn't work

Can't change profile settings, can't opt into Steam Beta, can't clear caches - no buttons work

EXPECTED
>should be able to click all sub-menu buttons, contextual menu-buttons, etc.
>should be able to right click a game and left click Properties to access Properties

----> I've reinstalled steam, and cleared out all related files on my system.

Debian 11 Linux, no issues before the latest update.

Temporarily found a fix, for those who may experience this problem..

Set the Library mode to "Small Mode"
View -> Small Mode

Right clicking sub-menus and sub-buttons now work as intended.

Same/similar issue where nothing on my Library tab works. Issue can be reproduced by restoring a maximized Library window from the system tray. Nothing will function and the contents won't visually update. Switching to other tabs works but going back to Library is still effectively frozen. Workaround is to drag the window or toggle maximize. Issue immediately comes back upon closing the window and bring it up again from the tray if the window was maximized when it was closed. Arch Linux + Gnome desktop environment on Xorg. Haven't updated any packages from before and after this issue started and occurs on another up to date machine on Arch Linux as well.

Edit: Not the same issue, occurs in Small Mode as well. May be a bad interaction between Steam and Gnome's window manager.

Edit: Upon going back to Stable the issue is gone, so it may have to do with one of the changes about window focus.

Also having the same issue. The small mode hack gets around it, but in the interest of maybe getting it fixed... I think that a bad interaction between gnome's window manager, Steam, and sloppy focus is likely -- clicking on context menus actually sends the click through to the main interface if there's something underneath to click on.

similar problem on Ubuntu 20.04

The problem is related not only to context menus on the right mouse button, but also to drop-down lists.

For example:

Steam > Settings > Interface -> "Steam Client language"
I select any language from the list, but nothing happens.

Also in the small mode.

Same here. Still an issue. Small mode lets you at least uninstall games and access their properties. But it doesn't help with drop down lists(e.g. changing client version to beta version, client language etc).

I've updated to Devuan 12 (Debian 12 but with sysvinit) and the problem persists. It's interesting that the issue occurs on many different distros! Glad we all found the workaround with small mode, at least.

Still a thing, latest version as of Jan 26 2024. CachyOS(Arch) + kde/plasma wayland. Using small mode works, but the automatic mode triggers the problem.

Didnt work for me:(
Also on CachyOS here, but using Xorg, maybe this is why.
I have alr had this issue happening for many years when I was using XFCE on Arch Manjaro.
I could click the major things such as steam settings and direct links such as forum posts and my profile stuff.
But editing my own posts or using many of the bkground menu options such as reply with quote and edit, just didnt work.

Hey Starbuck, sorry to hear you're having issues. The only way for me to get Steam game properties / menus to work is: Steam Small Mode + what the user Alex said ( Steam > Settings > Interface and Enable context menu focus compatbility mode).

Still happily running Debian 12 with Xorg/X11, JWM (Joe's Window Manager).

I wish you luck in finding a fix, and I also wish Valve could fix this--but, maybe one of us will eventually figure it out. Or, maybe Xorg/X11/Wayland will receive an update to fix this. I'm not sure. :D

TO ANYONE ON MINT AND/OR SEARCHING TO FIND ANSWER
Go to the app "windows", go to behavior, make sure on Window Foucs mode don't have "mouse" but instead put "click"

This fixed it. Tell me if this helps you (A fellow american)

The interface setting worked only once, while this worked perfectly fine.
Did only need the "right-click-menu" to remove a game from a category, Getting to it's properties, there are other options - just removing (or even assigning a game to a category requires the right-click-functionality.

Fixed it on Linux Mint Cinnamon.
Still a bit frustrating that I now have to get used to the change in everything else.
