'1 unread chat message' notification stuck
This has been affecting me for around 2 or 3 weeks now. Every time I load Steam the notification appears. Clicking on it brings up a blank chat window from an offline user called [unknown]. Upon closing the chat window, it cannot be opened again until Steam is restarted and the notification stays present.

As mentioned this has been happening for a while now and I'm sick of it. I just didn't know where to post this. I assume that opting in for the Steam Client Beta means I should post it here.

I have this problem too. Sent this to steam support and the Help and Tips foru:

So a guy added me. He was rude and mad at me for some reason. He talked to me for few minutes, then removed me from my friends list. He still kept sending messages, even though steam showed he was offline and not on my friends list. I was going to block him, but I had to go, so I shut down my PC. While it was shutting down I saw xx is writing a message, but didn't worry about it.
After coming back, I have 2 new messages notification. Clicking on it gives me a chat window, with no avatar and [Unknown] as the name, and status offline. Clicking on the nonexistent avatar opens his Steam profile, so it's a message from him that I can't read because he's not on my friends list anymore. Clicking on it didn't clear the message, neither did rebooting or restarting steam.

Should have mentioned this sooner but I think I've found a way to fix it. Log in to Steam through a web browser, then go to steamcommunity.com/chat and it should get rid of it.

I came here to post this problem - glad there's a fix for it. Thanks!

Anyone know why this occurs? I woke up this morning to 5 different [unknown]s and I haven't added any new friends recently. My first guess is that it's a message from a phishing account that then got banned, but how did they message me in the first place?
