Xbox Elite Series 2 (FW 5.13.3143.0) and paddles mapping
Hello!

I have Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and I'm using extended feature support for xbox controllers in Steam. It used to work perfectly fine, but just a few days ago I got a firmware update for the controller - it's version 5.13.3143.0 and now paddle mapping doesn't work anymore. If I try to use paddles when no profile is selected on the controller (i.e. default profile), it seems like there is no input from paddles whatsoever. If I switch to any of the profiles, the paddles just work as XABY duplicates.

I'm not sure if that's an issue with the firmware, or if Steam's driver just doesn't support the new firmware.
It is reproducible both with the stable version of the client and with the latest beta.

I created a support ticket: HT-6N8G-P86N-PD6G , but was asked to write a message here, so here it is.

Thank you!

♥♥♥♥!NG FINALLY! (Beta Channel for now.. )

Updated my Elite S2 to FW 5.17.3202.0 after opting in for the Steam Beta channel and the STUPID PADDLES FINALLY WORK AGAIN with Steam Input!.. About damn time!!! Just as I've expected, small wee pee update note in the background with barely any acknowledgement - Quote: "Improved reliability of Back button.".. Not even specifying ANYTHING at all, like what "back buttons", from where, who, when, why, where, what device.. anything.. :| That was not reliability anyways, that was straight up not working 100% all time every time!..

Whatever.. good that it FINALLY GOT SORTED!.. THANK YOU Valve!.. :steamfacepalm:

Now that I've finally discovered proper Gyro Aiming (and I mean PROPER, as in gaming mouse accuracy and latency, etc. - on select properly supported games) I am quite done for the most part with these now antiquated anti-innovation, anti common sense dinosaurs of "standard" controllers that we are stuck with for like 100 years.. Trying to use this controller (or this OBSOLETE "standard") now, no matter how well mapped, feels like it's missing two arms and a leg while trying to aim.. Lately I am finding myself using my DualSense Edge most, if not all of the time.. and if it's not the Edge, or the regular DualSense, it's an addon pack to turn my Series Controller into a Switch Pro Controller (thus adding native Gyro support, like the DualSense - or EVEN the now old DualShock 4!) With a regular controller it now feels like playing Counter-Strike with only the keyboard and no mouse.. :|

So.. yeah, nice fix Valve!.. A bit too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ late, but.. whatever..

EDIT: Hmm, I've just opted out of the Beta channel and the back paddles on the Controller do still work. Happy days I suppose. It remains unclear so as to what or who did REALLY fixed this.. issue, the Beta update (which I am now no longer on though.. ) or maybe one of the latest FW updates on the Elite S2.. Regardless, good that they are back working on the latest FW, so now I can also ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ use that ♥♥♥♥ controller with the retarded M$ Accessories App in order to configure it once more..

I think Microsoft broke the paddles in their latest update, seeing a lot of these posts lately. If anyone has working, remappable paddles, please chime in and help.

Can you check the controller's inputs and see if the paddles are even working? On my PC I can test all of the controller buttons in Control Panel-Devices and Printers-Right click the controller icon-game controller settings-properties. In default mode, every button lights up except for the paddles which don't light up at all. They're just totally disabled in default mode. If I rebind them using an Xbox Accessories profile then the paddles just emulate another button. The paddle buttons never light up, they're just straight up disabled.

So whatever Microsoft did, it completely disabled the paddles when using the default profile, so the paddle inputs are totally inaccessible by any other software, and inaccessible to steam's controller configurations.

Ah, I see, that was my guess as well. Worst part is that it looks like there's no way to downgrade controller's firmware from PC, you can only do that with an Xbox 😕

I upgraded to windows 11 and have this issue. i did not update the firmware.

Just found out how to revert to 4.8.1908.0 on pc (and have paddles work) - I tried this on windows 11 but I think it works all across.

Open xbox accessories app, then hit windows + R (run) and input this command:
xboxaccessories:\\firmwareupdate?legacyDowngrade=true

It should then give you option to revert.

Thanks a lot! That worked for me as well! It didn't work at first over wireless connection, but worked perfectly fine when I connected the controller with USB.

I am having this same problem. My best guess is that Microsoft made some change in their firmware that causes Steam's custom firmware (the "extended feature support" firmware) to work incorrectly.

I am still able to assign actions to the paddles in Steam's controller configurator. However, no matter what action I assign to the paddles, they will only reproduce the XABY face buttons on the controller.

I am sure I am using the default profile, the extended feature firmware is installed, etc. I have tried both wired and wireless.

Ideally, this will be fixed with no need to downgrade the controller's firmware version.

Thanks for this thread. I just got my Elite 2 this morning and was worried this was a permanent issue because I found a few Reddit threads about it with no answers from 1+ years ago. Reverting worked perfectly!

Ugh yep. Same issue. All paddle settings fail. Downgrading. W/ microsoft products it's really hit or miss with updates. You usually need to find an update that is stable and just keep it as long as possible.

Thank you so much for this thread. I just got an Elite 2 and was pulling my hair out over why the paddles didn't work in Steam. That, plus the official software only being able to assign existing buttons to the paddles, was making me regret the purchase a bit, even though the hardware itself is superb.

Please keep us informed here, I'd love to know if/when Valve fix the enhanced support so I can update the firmware again. :)

Just wanted to say thank for this post! Just today I decided to try out the extended support with my Elite V2 and after assigning the paddles they weren't responding in game. After downgrading the firmware, they work perfectly.

I am on Windows 11 and tested the custom paddle settings in The Witcher 2.

By the way, is there an official FAQ or manual on Steam for the Xbox Extended Feature Support? I wasn't able to find anything.

EDIT: I would like to note that as mentioned above the firmware downgrade didn't work over the wireless connection, but wired worked fine.

I'll not recommend it sadly, stick with the 4.8.1908.0 firmware while waiting for official statement.
AFAIK this is not something that could be fixed on Valve's end. Hopefully the next firmware version will have paddles working again with default mode, but so far there were no firmware updates.

I'm sticking to the older version 4.8.1908.0 thanks to the link to the downgrading process, but it does bug me that now I see that stupid red "firmware is reverted" message in the Accessories app.. Not only that, but now my controller does not rumble as hard as it did previously in more subtle effects.. which was the one thing that set it apart from other controllers until the upgrade.
Greensilver Jul 25, 2022 @ 10:42am
Does anybody have further tips on how to fix this? the downgrade option no longer works
sepruecom Aug 1, 2022 @ 6:16am
It still works, you have to do the following:

- The XBox Accessories App has be open
- the Controller has to be connected via USB and be switched on
- You have to be within one of the config profiles
- then you press Win-R and enter the command
- you will have to acknowledge that going back to an old firmware version is a bad idea two or three times (in other words click "OK" on the prompts that come up)
- The controller will then start to go back an older firmware version (since I just got the device, the one I bought it with).
