Big Picture Mode Crashing
I've had BPM crash on me while in games three times in the past few days, and I've gotten the following error message each time:

The D3D device was removed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET. This typically indicates a driver bug, or GPU hardware failing/overheating. If you were running a game at the time of this error then the game may have triggered a driver bug or caused your GPU to overheat. Big Picture must exit.

The first two instances of this happened while playing Elite: Dangerous, and I had to relaunch the game. The third time happened while playing Rocket League, and I was able to keep playing the game, though my display went black for a few seconds.

I did upgrade to a GTX 970 on Monday from a GTX 760, and I also updated to the latest NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready Driver (359.06) at that time, so it's difficult for me to tell if it's a driver issue or if it's hardware. I've run some stress tests on the GPU with 3DMark and Furmark and everything looks good, and while monitoring the temperature of my GPU I've never seen it hit over 75C. I've also been playing Rainbow Six: Siege quite a bit the past couple nights through Uplay, and I have not encountered any issues whatsoever.

It would seem that the issue isn't isolated to any one game, but I'm not sure at this point if it's a problem with (a) the latest Steam beta client, (b) the latest NVIDIA driver, or (c) my GTX 970. Has anybody experienced this issue before? Any help would be much appreciated! Please feel free to let me know if I should provide more information about my system.

I've had this issue non stop since they rolled out the new interface. Started out on windows 10, I tried as many nvidia drivers as possible and big picture would randomly minimize games and say d3d device was removed due to update etc. I just spent all day downgrading to windows 7, and of course, the problem followed. It isn't just in the beta either, its the main version of steam. Big picture is completely unusable for me now

And when did they roll out the new interface? Or how long exactly have you been having these issues? I've been using BPM pretty regularly for the past month and I never had any issues with it until a few days ago.

Two months ago iirc. I've been having issues since then.

Interesting. Like I said, I've only had issues the past few days now, so I'm not sure what the deal is for me. I guess I'll just keep an eye out for any further issues and report on them in this thread.

Quick update - I uninstalled my NVIDIA drivers and did a clean install of them yesterday. Everything was looking good, but then I had the same thing happen to me while playing Rocket League. This time, the screen went gray and then black for a few seconds, and I lost audio permanently (I'm assuming it has something to do with the fact that I was playing on my TV via HDMI and audio was being sent that way). Upon exiting Rocket League, I had the same error message.

Trust me I have tried all that. I'm on older drivers at the moment (from May) and they seem to be working a little better. Still get the error from time to time. What version of Windows you on? One thing that definitely reduced the frequency of the error is going from Windows 10 to 7. But of course, the problem is still there, its just less frequent.

I'm on Windows 10 64-bit.

Yup, that's probably part of the problem right there. Something is wrong with steam where its having issues with the nvidia drivers it seems, and even more so on windows 10, but it is still present somewhat on 7

I just can't help but feel like there's something else going wrong because I was running games in BPM just fine in Windows 10 before. This only started happening once I changed GPUs and video drivers. I wish I had written down which video drivers I was using before I switched GPUs, because then I would go back to that and see if the issue persisted.

I personally believe its something to do with steam, because even older nvidia drivers are causing issues

Well honestly that's what I'm hoping the case is, because I really don't want it to be the physical GPU hardware. Having said that, I'd really like to hear back from Steam support and get some confirmation.

Yeah let me know if you have any luck

So I think I may have stumbled onto something. I reseated my GPU on Friday after a friend recommended trying that. I ended up having Big Picture Mode crash on me again the next day while playing Rocket League, so ultimately it didn't work. However, ever since then, I've had EVGA PrecisionX running in the background in the hopes that the next time it crashes, I can pull up Precision and view stats on the GPU from the past minute, which would in theory let me see if it's actually overheating or if there's a voltage issue or at least something that would help me troubleshoot. So far though, I haven't seen any crashes with PrecisionX running in the background. Granted it's only been a few days so far, but I definitely would have expected at least one crash by now. I don't have PrecisionX set up to overclock or anything, but I'm pretty sure that by default it's set to limit power usage to 100% (and it can be set to be over 100%). Do you think it's possible that somehow my GPU has been using more than 100% power and somehow that has been resulted in Big Picture Mode crashing? I still don't know why that would only impact Big Picture Mode and not anything else, but it's just a thought.

Windows 10, BPM has crashed on me multiple times today.
Really frustrating as I'm using the controller, and when that goes down so does my controller!
Just made me lose a mission in freespace 2 :(

What kind of error is it giving you when it crashes?
