I can’t use AMD hardware encoding for steam remote play.

Issue:
I can't manually turn on AMD hardware encoding for steam remote play for HEVC encoding as well as h.264 and will always resort to software encoding

Steps:
- go to steam setting and click remote play
- I turn on advanced options for host and scroll down to the "hardware encoding" option
- I turn on and encoding
- I restart my PC
- then I use my iPad to stream to my PC
- I go into steam settings and click on remote play
- I turn on advanced options for client
- I turn on performance overlay (detailed)
- It shows under encoding that it is using software encoding still.

Same problem here. Which AMD card are you using? There was a bug in sunshine that caused it to revert back to software or x264 encoding due to an AMF bug. Changing the profile from ultralowlatency to lowlatency solved it. I don't know if Steam uses the same profile plus Steam doesn't give us those options.

I'm using a 6700 xt, I see, so is sunshine a better streaming app for playing games?

Sunshine works exceptionally well on my old 580, including HEVC. All things considering it is still much better than Steam remote play, even with the recent fixes like overlay and hardware decoding.

@bblacher i was having the same issue and found this thread, switching to Sunshine on my PC and Moonlight on my client was dramatically better
