Guest controller not connecting in Steam Remote Play Together.
ISSUE
Guest controller not connecting in Steam Remote Play Together.

OS
Windows 10 on both machines.

STEPS
  1. Select any game which supports two players with controllers.
  2. Invite friend to Steam Remote Play Together.
  3. Open Steam overlay and notice that guest controller is not visible/accessible
  4. Try in-game as well but does not work.

TRIED
  • Different host machine.
  • Both controllers definitely work.
  • Restarted system.
  • Restarted router.
  • Restarted Steam.
  • Re-downloaded Steam Beta test.
  • Tried reversing host and guest machine set-up.

NOTES
Steam Remote Play Together has worked before under the exact same circumstances, except that Valve might have released a new Steam Client Beta updated since then, I'm not sure.

I too am having similar issues. I noticed this started between the 15th and the 18th:

Past successful games that remote play together worked with my friend and I both using a controller (xbox 1)

  • Ys: Lacrimosa of Dana
  • Children Of Morta
  • Gauntlet TM
  • Enter The Gungeon
  • Binding of Isaac

Around the listed date - Controller support on remote no longer works, however keyboard does.

Our TS steps were similar to Nootnas under the same conditions.

Did the controller work in big picture on the remote user's computer?

Sorry, I left that portion of TSing out.

I had tried using big picture mode on the remote user's computer yes and the controller wasn't recognized. We also tested vice versa where I had used big picture mode and came up with the same results. Keyboard is being recognized, however for some of the games we play this isn't ideal (such as Ys: Lacrimose of Dana, the remote user's keyboard controls the same character that the controller us controlling).

Prior to this, neither of us had to have big picture mode up before. We would simply load up the game without it while both being opted under beta and were able to participate with our own controllers.

Additionally the steps listed were TS steps that each of us had tried to rule out individual issues, and tested with multiple games to rule out a game specific/update issue.

Does the controller work properly with the other person's controller in their instance of Big Picture when no streaming is happening?

Both the guest and host controllers work in steam big picture mode, but the guest controller is still not recognized in the Remote Play Together session.

Could you try disconnecting whatever device has the USB VID/PID of 04d9 a292 and see if that helps things out. Your controller related logs are showing a bunch of repeated entries for that device and maybe that's interfering with detecting the Xbox controller? I also see a Steam Controller in there but that comes in through a different input system than xbox controllers and would be unaffected.

The device with that VID/PID was my keyboard so I disconnected it, however the problem persists.

I don't know if it matters but I am using the Steam controller and the guest is using a DualShock 4 controller, so there should not be an Xbox controller connected.

Remote Play Together seems to work fine right now. We didn't do anything differently so some update may have fixed it. Thought I should let you know.

PS5 controller does not connect via Bluetooth. It can be found in the options under "PS5 Dual sense", but ingame it does neither react nor gets any signal from Steam configuration regarding light color. As soon as I connect it with an USB cable it works properly.

And the issue is still same. Remote play Feature is just joke.

I bought game to play with my friend but every game. I invite, put him as 2nd player. set his joystick as 2nd player. everything looks fine. and start the game.

boom his controller not working in the game. no key input. can't even start/select 2nd hero to join the game. head banding 40 min and refund the game after that.

Really wanna play with my friend but its doesn't work. :( feel bad after all that

Spent some time yesterday and today troubleshooting controller connectivity issues and ultimately what we found that worked consistently was the client (your friend) would need to simply hit ALT+TAB to put the remote session in focus.

Seems like even if the remote play session is what the client has maximized, it won't recognize the input until alt tabbing into it for some strange reason. Valve should probably fix this as it is extremely frustrating.

Thanks, it not worked first but then I disconnected and connected the gamepad after alt+tab and it worked. But I think this is not how the RemotePlay should work.
