New Big Picture UI extremely laggy in full screen mode
So basically on Vanilla Arch on a 4k screen it appears the New Big Picture UI is quite buggy with some parts not rendering when in the menu and borderline unusable when in full screen mode. I got the version from the AUR and not the Flatpak, so maybe that's the issue.

Doing that will put the strain on the GPU instead of the CPU, potentially causing performance issues when playing games on some hardware.

It's a workaround, not a fix. Valve shoul fix and optimized their stuff, but "modern" Valve (yes, the same who was obsessed with releasing only polished products) don't care about it anymore.

I really don't know why I needed to Disable GPU blocklist so I've never tried it. I'm on a 1060 Palit card, maybe Palit is to obscure of a Graphics card manufacturer. Anyways, that totally fixed the issue which is great, and annoying as well. The tip with turning off GPU rendering in web views made BIg Picture run even worse outside of games as well as in-game

Yes, it's a design fault unfortunately. There is no fix to it.

HERE IS THE FIX:

Steam Settings > Interface > Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views

You can also mess with GPU blocklist steam settings as well as window's enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, but this is the setting that finally did it for me and I never see it mentioned anywhere else.

For those still suffering from the poor performance in Big Picture Mode:
there is an option called 'Enable smooth scrolling in web views' (Settings -> Interface). It seems to induce some heavy lag when switching steam to BPM. Turning it off helped me a lot.

Thank you f0r posting this solution. I had tried everything else in this thread, but nothing worked. This fixed my problem entirely!

How do you know it's a design fault?

The problem is still there for me. Latest example: Yakuza Kiwami 2.

I'm playing in 4K (via an NVIDIA custom resolution) and I've got an RTX 3080 / 5900X.

I've tried the solutions in this topic, but unfortunately they don't solve anything. By default, all options were checked.

When I'm in the game, I have no worries about slowdown, in 4K60. But when I open the Big Picture, it slows down (the noise seems OK, but to go from one menu to another, it slows down, as if I had 15 fps).

If someone could give me a tip, I'm beginning to despair.... When I see that next to it, the PS5 has a menu that works perfectly for consulting trophies and all, it pisses me off!

If it helps anyone, I disabled the GPU blocklist and now it's as smooth as butter, it might not work for you but it's always worth a shot

It's caused by HW acceleration off. You should run Steam with HW acceleration on so Steam will put the load on your GPU instead of the CPU.

The whole framework Steam is using from 2018 to display animations in Steam is totally unoptmized and can easily choke a CPU, no matter how powerful.

Also in the stable client there is a circle animation always running in the background (i don't know if it's the same with the beta) and this will cause a severe tax on your CPU (or GPU if you are using HW acceleration) when playing a game. Again, i don't know if it's a feature or a bug that was fixed in a later beta.

Thank you 👊🏼

Wow this is the only thing that helped, i already had hw acceleration on, thank you very much its crystal fluid now, i have had it like that for months maybe years and didnt bother fixing it but this just helped easily
