New Big Picture UI extremely laggy in full screen mode
So basically on Vanilla Arch on a 4k screen it appears the New Big Picture UI is quite buggy with some parts not rendering when in the menu and borderline unusable when in full screen mode. I got the version from the AUR and not the Flatpak, so maybe that's the issue.

This is an issue in latest steam for windows build too. Mostly happens after closing a game. It is like gamepadui is scaling differently from nbpm so cant show the settings menu like expected.
win10 22h2

Have just changed from an nvidia gpu to amd, so have been doing a lot of stuff that still may need tweaking more on my end. Will see if can switch FSR off for Steam but have FSR on for steam game

KDE Neon user here

Running it in windowed mode doesn't do too much of an improvement.

Lag comes also with CPU usage spikes and skyrocketing RAM usage.

yeah, although there is a minor improvement in windowed mode, It's still better on Windows for some odd reason.

It's caused by HW acceleration off. You should run Steam with HW acceleration on so Steam will put the load on your GPU instead of the CPU.

The whole framework Steam is using from 2018 to display animations in Steam is totally unoptmized and can easily choke a CPU, no matter how powerful.

Also in the stable client there is a circle animation always running in the background (i don't know if it's the same with the beta) and this will cause a severe tax on your CPU (or GPU if you are using HW acceleration) when playing a game. Again, i don't know if it's a feature or a bug that was fixed in a later beta.

So from what I have noticed is that running in window mode actually gives a major improvement if you do not make the window cover your whole monitor. I set mine to windowed and it gave me a window that covers maybe 35 - 40% of my monitor but the FPS gain is 100% worth the loss.

How do you enable hw acceleration?

How do you enable hw acceleration?
from the general steam client settings.

also gpu acceleration for web view is necessary for the new client to reduce lag

Is it still laggy on Nvidia? thinking of getting a 4090 and selling my 7900XTX.

Yeah that setting has always been on and it still does it. Its not laggy all the time tho, like if i have no game running then it runs at my monitors fps (165). Then if i even open a not very demanding game like gmod it feels choppier. Tbf it might just be capping the big picture fps to 60 when a game is running to save resources. But if i open a bigger game like rdr2 or god of war, then you can really feel it. Its like 20 fps and really slow.

How do you turn on HW acceleration?

Settings -> Interface -> Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views

For those still suffering from the poor performance in Big Picture Mode:
there is an option called 'Enable smooth scrolling in web views' (Settings -> Interface). It seems to induce some heavy lag when switching steam to BPM. Turning it off helped me a lot.

Go into Big Picture mode then go to the Settings. From there: Display --> Advanced Settings --> turn on "Disable GPU Blocklist".

This fixed the laggy UI for me. Hope this helps someone!
