===========WORKAROUND=============
If steam remembers to launch in big picture, it can be challenging to go to settings to turn it off
Make sure all steam instances are closed (run ```ps -eaf | grep -i steam``` and make sure only your grep comes back, nothing else). Kill any steam processes that are running
Then, run ```steam -nobigpicture```, and it'll force itself into desktop mode. Then, go to settings and opt out of the beta.
You can also use -newbigpicture and -oldbigpicture, if you want to play around
