Mac OS X - full-screen video makes entire screen go black
ISSUE
When I click the full-screen button on any video in the Steam.app Mac client, the entire screen goes black and the only way to get control of my computer back is to hit CMD-OPT-ESC which then immediately crashes the Steam app.

OS
Mac OS X 10.11.6
iMac 27-inch, Late 2013, with external monitor

This is a *regression* -- for a long time you couldn't play videos on Mac, then you fixed it about a year ago, now it's back.

It's 2020, and that horrible bug is still there. Maybe y'all ought to disable playing videos fullscreen until you get it fixed. Pretty bad when the bug not only stops your own software from working but my entire computer as well.

It’s 2022 and this problem still occurs. CMD-OPT-ESC won’t let me out. Stuck on a black screen.

When I try to make a video from the steam client app go to full screen by hitting the rectangle in the bottom right hand side of the video window, the audio continues to play but the screen goes black. If I hit the escape key, the steam client screen becomes visible again with the non-full-screen video playing as an embedded element of the page. If I right-click on the video and select "Copy Page URL" and paste it into the Safari browser, it brings up the page with the embedded video on it. If I play the video in Safari, I can make it full screen as expected. I am having this problem on a 2021MacBook Pro running macOS Ventura 13.0.1.

I have exactly this problem. However, I've found that if I wait ~15 seconds with only the audio playing with the black screen and I don't press any keys , the black screen eventually goes away and the video starts to play.

(If I do get stuck in the "black screen" due to pressing a key or something while waiting, I've found I can still manage to press CMD-Q to quit Steam)

I just tried letting the content play with the black screen for up to a couple of minutes but the video never appeared even though the audio kept playing with the black screen. Thanks for the suggestion.

As of March 2023 it's still there. Only thing I could do was a hard reset. Awesomely ♥♥♥♥♥.

I was having the same issue. I have created a video documenting the bug I'm describing, and also I show a workaround in the video. Basically, see if you can resize the window at the sides/corners.

This problem appears to be fixed in the latest release! Finally! I notice that the fonts for the menu items in the new steam client appeared to be different so I thought I'd test to see if a full screen video worked from the steam store. Much to my surprise, they play fine new in fulls screen and don't hang my computer any more..
